3rd hand anyone?

Postby nofinchance » 19 Jan 2010 16:13

I am one step closer to getting my car right[:D].Fitted a new window regulator to the drivers door so I can put the window up and down now.Wired up the door lights while I was there as well. That was the easy bit[:p].Getting the window runners, regulator wheels, door channel wheel and winding part all in the correct position is a skill needing 3 pairs of hands and a helper[B)].As usual mr 'Haynes' washes his hands of the whole thing only saying 'fitting is the reverse of removal' GIT !!! [:)].Removal was a pain as 'slideing the unit out of the rear apature' is not possible as the winding end is too big for the hole unless you take the door opening rod off. This needs careful handling or the spring on the handle end will launch itself into space[:0].Anyway job done, never again I hope.Call the crazy house cuz I sat in the car on the drive winding the window up and down smileing[:X].

WEDGE PILOT!!!
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!!!. IN ADDTION ,AS YOU SAID,TO NEEDING THREE HANDS AND A HELPER, I NOW HAVE NO SKIN ON THE BACK OF MY HANDS AND THE JOB IS STILL QUESTIONABLE. IN MY CASE THE GLASS KEPT JUMPING OUT OF THE TRACK.
I ALSO SIT IN MY DRIVEWAY WINDING THE WINDOW UP AND DOWN BUT ALWAYS WITH MY HAND ON THE TOP OF THE GLASS WHEN WINDING DOWN. THE NEIGHBORS ASSUME I HAVE A FETISH AND DOGS BARK. WHY THEY DID NOT MAKE THOSE HOLES IN THE DOOR LARGER IS BEYOND ME. ITS AS IF THE ASSEMBLY LINE WORKERS WERE ALL WOMEN OR VERY SMALL MEN. DOES NO ONE CARE ABOUT THE HAM FISTED?

Indeed a tight fit but it does all come out and go back in. I get my wife to hold the window up about 2/3rds way while putting rollers back in tracks which is the tricky part. Like removing quarter lite window without breaking paint, a skill with chinese puzzles comes in handy.

Yes, there's a point, with the glass about 1/4, to 1/3rd down from
the top, where the rollers go back in quite, [well reasonable]
easily.

I offcourse, discovered this while doing the 4Th & last of my window
install jobs.

Whist I've not done the job on a TR-7, I've done it on other cars and holding the window part way up is often the way it's done.
There are some commercially available tools to do the job they are sort of like a pair of tongs with suction caps on the ends, but I don't know how good they are as I've not used them.

I clamp the window in the desired place using a "C" type Visegrip with the swivelling pads on the jaws. For flat glass you can place a 50mm square piece of plywood pad under each of the vicegrip jaws to spread the load. Don't apply to much pressure on the vicegrips, use just enough to hold the window in the desired place!
For curved glass you will need something softer, more flexible for the pads like some pieces of conveyor belt rubber or maybe they could be cut from an old mudflap etc.

I did the same as Cobber but used a standard G Cramp and some soft rubber I had around - hook it over the sidelight and it holds the glass without any problems. Just don't overtighten!

how do you get the rubber scraper ("waist seal") on the door top? I was able to hold the driver's side seal in the correct position while sliding on the spring clips. The pass. side seal was a "universal fit" and does not snug down to the door top while trying to get the clips on. Another 3 hands required, 2 to hold seal, 1 to secure clips, and not enough room for thumbs and fingers. Is there a tool for this?

I assume the waist seal you are reffering to is the outside one. (The new door cards have removable/replaceable seals). With the window out (which is when I replaced the seals) I just pulled the clips up with my fingers with the seal in position.

There is a special tool. Jclay has posted a photo of it.

I simply cut a strip of metal from the side of an old frig, [a bit
heaver than body metal], about a foot long, & an inch wide, bent
the bottom 3/4" up at about 165/170 degrees, to hold the clips, &
wrapped some masking tape around the top for a grip. This is used
to pull the clips up tight.

A bit of blue tac in the clip holder area helps keep the clip in,
while manovering the thing around.

Have fun.
