Removing the black under seal

I need to remove the black (rubber like) underseal that I have on the bottom of my car. I only need to remove a small amount at the moment to do a repair. I have tried heat, freezing it and scraping it. Will next try the old wire brush on the drill to take it off.

Does anyone know of anything that will remove this stuff or is it going to be the brush on the drill?

Any solvent will remove underseal. For example, tar remover or petrol works well, but protect your hands (and don't smoke!)

White spirits should work as well. At least, it did with the stuff that was on mine.

Be warned though; it makes a right mess! It turns into a sticky, goopy, tar-like substance that's a real pain to shift. Wear gloves!

Cheers guys will try this tonight and see how I get on. Once this is done I can paint the bit and fix it in place.

I found the Finnegan's waxoyl type underseal didn't respond well to wire type cup brushes on an electric drill. The wire brush clogged up real easy and was pretty useless after that. It felt a bit like stirring soup or watching someone mop a dirty floor just to rearrange the dirt. I used a thin scraper to take off the worst followed by white spirit solvent on a rag in the end.

Maybe a wire brush in an angle grinder would be better due to the higher speed. Then again wouldn't it just fling black gunge all over the place?

Any idea what product the rubbery underseal might be?
