I'm very excited!

Postby Steve-LPS-Thomas » 18 Jan 2010 21:59

Just surfaced after 30 years.. Pictures of the Willhire 24hr Race 1980. Picture taken by Julian Roberts and used with his kind permission. It's one of two he took of MYE778P (freshly painted in Sponsor's maroon livery. He recalls gearbox problems forcing a high speed trip to the nearest BL dealer to "borrow" a replacement.

[:D]It's a great picture, now my desktop wallpaper.. I can't stop looking at it![:D] Check the guy tipping in the petrol!

Image

Also check the new signature strip.. MYE in her first incarnation.. pictures lifted from the European Launch Brochure 1975.. (Tunisia? Algeria? Morrocco?)

That brings back memories for me too. Not because I was there or anything like that. The first non-Triumph that I ever owned, and also the first car with back seat, was a '73 BMW 3.0s, to see two of my favorite cars all dressed up like that is pretty cool. In some ways I miss that old beast but it sure was a gas hog. 16mpg no matter what conditions were.

Thanks,

Wondered if anyone would spot the "red noses". Thing is... red nose day wasn't invented till 1985 (remember that, might just win you a quiz show!)

Some Transit vans are still sporting the '85 red nose melted into the grill. They also have a white sick on the top of the door where the 'Engerland' flag used to be [;)].

OK...I'll bite. What's the significance of the red rose and red rose day. Here in Canada it recalls the advertisement for Red Rose tea whereby a group of upper crust Brits are sipping on tea commenting on how good it tastes and one says "It's only available in Canada you say....pity!"[:D]

Its the British equivalent of the ribbon pinned to your lapel. Red Nose day is supported by all the commedians & the emphasis is on having a laugh while raising money for the wretched.

I assumed they were fog lights. It is England after all. [:D]

It's Red Nose day - a televised charitable event run every other year here in the UK which has grown to be a huge fundraiser for Comic Relief, a UK charity for the purposes of helping the less fortunate people of this world.

Inspired by the terrible scenes of African famine that came onto our TV screens in the 80s, it started as an event organised by well known comics & entertainers but now involves just about anyone who wants to join in!

The Red Nose has become a symbol of the day, & plastic red noses are sold in the run up to the event as part of the fundraising.

Great picture Steve - have you bought that Bandai 1/20th scale kit of MYE off Ebay yet? If not, why not!

No problem, Dick gave me quite a few pictures and documents of the car when I bought it. He also regaled me with many stories etc. but even at the time I wished that I had a tape recorder with me as I knew that I would never remember half of what he told me.

Work, a house move, my business and my other car WAC has taken up most of my time (and money) over the last 4 years but I hope to get MYE on the road this summer. To be honest, it's so immaculate after Dick's rebuild I am reluctant to use it.

I know that a lot of people believe that cars are for using but I would honestly put this car in the middle of my lounge if I could! I love the car and it's history. I'm sure that one day someone (if not me) will put this car back on the track and really I am just the current custodian. MYE is not for sale but if she were (like Bert and the Lemans car) I would only sell to the "right" person.

No Tony, I think it's still on there.. It's quite expensive (copied the pix for free!) I already have a huge (500+) collection of model VW's (Started collecting them in the late 70's and stopped about 10 years ago). I have about 20 TR7's too including a few made-up kits. These models are a source of annoyance to my wife.. She likes a minimalistic lifestyle while I am a bit of a hoarder! Hence no desire to get the Bandai kit, although I admit to being pretty tempted! I'll probably weaken at some point...

Here's the second pic, courtesy of Julian Roberts. The car in front is a Toyota... well actually it's behind and being driven by non other than Martin Brundle. Other Willhire 24 entrants included Tiff Needell and Sir Stirling Moss.
