Handbrake drum lever extensions

Postby Bobbieslandy » 13 Jan 2010 21:46

Hi,

I made a couple of extensions for the levers which push the shoes onto the drums, made a reasonable job of it out of stainless and now the cable which pulls them on is too short. i've dialled out as much play as i could on the adjuster but the cable is still way too long. i got the measurements from a TR7 book by Roger Williams and he made no mention about modifying the cable or replacing it for a shorter version. Any ideas chaps? admitedly the light was fading fast so it may be something simple i missed! I'll get some pics on here hopefully tomorrow.

Rob.

Look where the cable is attached to the back of the hand brake itself (under the tranny tunnel). Make sure the adjustment there is let out as far as it would go. Otherwise, maybe you can make longer versions of the brackets that attach the cable to the levers.

But baby, I thought I was doing my best.

Keep in mind that the 4-speed and 5-speed cables were different lengths. 4-speed cables are longer and maybe this mod was designed for early cars.

Hi all,

Appologies for talking rubbish!

"I made a couple of extensions for the levers which push the shoes onto the drums, made a reasonable job of it out of stainless and now the cable which pulls them on is too short"

This isn't true, the cable which clips onto the brakeshoe levers on the back of the drums is now too LONG!! have no idea why i wrote too short. now i've fitted the extensions you can literally pull the hand brake up vertically and there is still a few inches of slack there. the rest of it is true, sorry about that!

i've dialled out as much play as i could on the adjuster but the cable is still way too long. i got the measurements from a TR7 book by Roger Williams and he made no mention about modifying the cable or replacing it for a shorter version. Gound is too wet and muddy for pics unfortunately.

Hi Rob,

Did you get to adjust the handbrake lever end of the cable - if you are going to do this it's worth dropping the whole cable assembly off and giving a good clean and re-grease, I found that it helped no end.

If You fancy a trip to the drivers club we now meet at the "Windmill motoring Inn" at Chatham Green (far less charred).
Or the TR register East Saxons group Tonight at the square and compasses at West Hanningfield.

Cheers

Hi Ian,

I haven't adjusted the hand brake lever end of the cable, a mixture of anger at the sprint engine i've just wasted a couple of hundred quid on and fading daylight stopped me going anywhere near the TR7! i'll have a proper look at the weekend, need to start working on it at some point otherwise it'll never get finished!

what time is the meet at the square and compasses? thats not too far from me at all, need to get out the house before the soaps start!

Rob.

Finally got the TR7 up on ramps to sort out this slack hand brake cable. It seems that it's the cable which joins the LH to the RH drum which is now too long so i'm going to make a shorter one at work. Once it's all done i'll let you know if it's any better.
