Seats

Postby alanjarvis » 07 Jan 2010 14:31

This is probably a stupid question but are the left and right seats the same? My drivers seat is very worn out now but since no one ever dares to accompany me in the TR the passenger's one is quite good. Can I just swap them over? How do you get them out?

Cheers!

Alan you cant swap them over the frames are different because of the seat belt position and recliner lever. The covers are interchangeable so you can buy another passenger seat in the same material and swap the covers with the ones on your drivers seat.

Alan,
The seats are handed left & right so cannot just be swapped. If it's just the cover that's worn you could swap them over, but if the foams etc have had it you're best bet is to refurbish the seat. All the bits you need are available from the usual suppliers, apart from some of the covers, depends what you've got.
The seats are just bolted to the floorpan with 4 bolts.

Hi,

If you're absolutely stuck for a driver's seat, then the passenger seat CAN be swapped over. I did it for a year when the Pirelli rubber base mat on mine ripped. No-one had any stock and it took months to find a good s/h item. Thankfully parts are more readily available now.

The seat belt stalk was moved over to the other side of the seat as the frame is threaded on both sides to accept the bolt / assembly. It passed 2 MOT inspections. The seat recliner lever couldn't be moved over but it wasn't a problem fitting the passenger seat to the driver's. The lever became a snug fit against the transmission tunnel's carpet and could still be operated but how often do you adjust the seat in a 2 seater sports car anyway? Mine's stayed in the same position for the last 29 years......

The seats are only bolted to the floor with 4 Torx style bolts and are easily removed. Why not have a look to see if it works for you if you're in a temporary fix?

+1...just did it in my Tr7. I dont know how to weld, and the drivers frame is broke. So I took the pass side one out of my parts car, swapped the seat belt catch to the rightside and voila! Instant unbroken driver side seat for meee. Recliner lever is on the opposite side of a drivers-seat but Im the only pilot so it doesnt bother me.

As a side issue be careful getting the seat retaining bolts out.I have just changed my interior and rounded off a quaility tool freeing them up.They are bound to be a bit rusty so give them a good soak a day or two before trying to shift em.I had to grind one out so get a few spare if you can for replacements as also some of mine refused to screw back in on one hole but would on another. Also note the position of the plates under the seat that go between the seat and the carpet. There is a big one that goes on the rear near the trans tunnel.Think it's for protecting the carpet if the seats right back it leaves a big gap in the carpet if it's not there! also dont loose the rectangle washers that fit into the seat runners. When screwing the seat in do the front first then move it forward on the runners and do the back otherwise it will tip under it's own weight and fight you all the way. Also dont tighten any bolt fully until they are all started as sometimes one B*****D hole wont line up.

Cheers Alan,
What color are your seats, I have a black seat cover, and a tartan blue seat cover, both in good shape.
