Roll over bars.

Postby Maki » 02 Jan 2010 15:16

What are your opinions on Roll Over Bars on the convertible, do they need it, are they any good?

I have had my Convertible for 23 years and never really though about it. However, having a young Daughter how loves the car, it does rather make me think.
I know Rimmers sell one but I do not know as to how effective it is or if it is more asthetic.

Also as anaside, has anybody used uprated anti roll bars on their cars and if so is there a benifit?

Hi,
I fitted one to mine and as my learned friend Stevie says they do stiffen the shell up and of course there is also improved safety.
Downside is rear view slightly effected, hood storage cover needs cutting and slightly less room for hood storage.
They quite often appear on Fleabay at a good price if you are paitent.
Cheers John

Hello Maki

For what it's worth, the car in my signature area was rolled and the owner suffered serious neck injuries, effectively from having his head forced downwards (actually upwards I suppose) by the roof - admittedly a fixed head car. I think it's possibly difficult to roll a 7 or 8 but it does happen and personally I'd remove as much of the risk as possible if you're in any doubt.

I've got a roll bar for my dhc and it'll definitely be fitted, visibility reduction notwithstanding. Having had two wedges written off with me in them I'll also be wearing a full suit of armour...

Cheers

Graham

I agree, I think it may be difficult to turn a 7 but who knows? Like I have said I have had the car 23 years and another one before that. I don't know something has just stared to niggle me, maybe just the thought of what could happen to you and your children.

A roll bar would be a great idea on a convertible. They are perfect for mounting spotlights & heavy machine guns on which will become very useful when the oil wars start. [:D]

Hi Guys
I know all the safety issue argument and i think that they must do something mine had one with the race seats and i think it looked the nuts but i put my 7 back to how it left the factory with original seats and with those i did not like the look and i took the roll bar out and i must say to me and it is my own personal opinion the 7 convertible looks fantastic with out it lovely nice clean lines but safety wise there great.[:D]

i think that if i got nervous about going out in my car without a roll bar i would get rid ot it , dont think a roll bar would make the slightest difference if your hit in a tr7 !! maybe a new Volvo would be better !! Zoe

Not to worry. The Oil Sands alone has more oil than Saudi Arabia, add to that, there are over 200 years of oil within the USA borders by their own reckoning so there is no shortage of oil available(estimates are available in documents available for viewing on governemnt websites.) True most are on federal lands that is exempt from drilling so the wars mentioned might more appropriately called "The Greenie Wars".[:)]

I got Robsport to fit a second hand roll over bar to my TR7. I think you need to take to hood off to do it but as mine needed a new one this was not a problem. Its a very close fit over the hood and makes putting it up and down a bit tricker. Rear view is slightly restricted (bar appears in to top of the rear view mirror image). I got a local tailor to modify the hood bag so it fits, but after I have struggled so much with the hood bag poppers and getting them to fit I made two straps with poppers at each end and when I put the hood down I just secure it with these straps and don't bother with the hood bag anymore. I've not fitted the machine guns yet.
On another point I just got my TR7 out from under its outdoor cover to try and de-ice it a bit for Monday trip to work [:(]. I didn't realise but ice had formed on the inside of the hood so after a bit of defrosting, i sat in the drivers seat, slammed the door and got a ice cold shower of water drops from the roof. I love my TR7 [:D]

Just to put the roll bar thing into perspective. Please don't read
this, if you are at all squeamish.

When I was racing, way back in the 60s, very few sports cars were
fitted with rollover bars, but most open wheelers were.

I had 2 friends, & 2 acquaintances killed racing. All 4 had rollover
bars fitted. 2 of then were actually killed by the roll bar. Another
was held by the seat belt, so he could not duck the wire, [of a
barbed wire fence] that cut his throat, when his Lotus 27 [open
wheeler]went through it.

I had a couple of friends survive very big prangs. One fell out
while his Lotus 22, [open wheeler] was in the air, upside down. The
roll bar ended up down into the seat, & would have killed him.

I will not use a roll bar, except in a sedan, & it would have to be
a full cage.

I refuse to wear a seat belt in a soft top. I have mine fixed at the
top, & draped over my sholder, so our boys in blue can not see I am
not wearing it.

WE are all a product of our experience, & mine tell me that roll
bars, & seat belts are dangerous.

Reminds me of the time a friend and I were coming home from some twilight golf. A MG Midget had flipped on it's side (end of accident position). It had a roll over bar. Don't know the mechanics of the accident but the driver was in the drivers seat (kind of) with his girl friend sitting on the road, holding his head in her lap, sitting in a pool of his blood. My friend got out and offered his assistance to the attending RCMP officer as he had industrial first aid. The officer said "he was beyond that" meaning he was dead. Roll over bar did't help him but a helmet might have. (can't recall if he had a lap belt or not). Somehow his girlfriend escaped without a visible scratch. The blood pool stained the road for months as it was summer and no rain to wash it away.

exactly, for "real" protection, it would have to be a properly constructed roll cage for me, or nothing at all...... the commonly referred to two or four point "styling- bar" that we see an example of in the photo of leevaux's car offer's absolutely no roll over protection what so ever, and is commonly built with light weight and non conform steel and/or attachment (and often other not so likable materials such as aluminum and believe it or not, I've even seen one made of PVC pipe.
A proper spec roll-over bar would also have to be higher than the driver and passengers head, think about it......you would not want to be rear ended with one of those cheap styling bars at the same level as your noggin would you?????

Here's a goo link for roll bar basics,
