Leaking Mohair.

When I picked my son up from the airport, last week, I took the 8, &
almost went topless. The forcast, & the weather radar showed the
odd shower, so I put the hood up. I almost may not have bothered.
In that 160Km round trip, the car saw more rain than it has in the
last 4 years.

The hood is Mohair, & has seen little sun, or rain, but watertight
it is not. After an hour of constant heavy rain it was as
watertight as the average sieve.

It was leaking at some seams, but was so saturated in many places,
the water was oozing through.

I have never been rich enough to own a Mohair hood before, mine have
always been vinyl, so I have no idea of what to do about it.

Don't take it out in the rain is probably the best advice, but there
must be a waterfroof treatment for the thing. Would those of you
with the necessary experience please advise.

PS. Although the forcast was for ocasional showers, the whole
district got between 2 & 4 inches, & these dills expect us to
believe they can forcast the temperature in 50, & 100 years. Yes,
pull the other one mate, it yodels.

Can you get this stuff over in Aus?

http://www.renovointernational.com/products/uproof.php

Top quality stuff, it will stop the leaks if you can get hold of some. Or maybe they can send mail order from the UK....

Aahh, my friend, you seem to have forgotten the Great Philosophy of Triumphs; 'In ones Triumph, tis never the destination that counts, tis the journey.'

Seems like Renovo is the first choice for many.
Fabsil is another, used for waterproofing tents.

And this believe it or not.

Got the rep to spray my coat with this and it works a treat. Comes in aerosol or brush on. I think brush on will work out cheaper.
Should be avaiable over there too [:)].

In the winter time I always get asked if the hood (pvc)leaks.

"Only when it rains" is the reply. In prolonged rain it has always leaked where the top of the quarterlights meet the windscreen frame corners and roof. All TVR's and E Types are reputedly the same. I've never had a leak through the material or seams though.

We had an MX5 for 2 years, Mohair hood, parked on the drive outside in all weathers. It never leaked once but that's the Japanese for you. Take a british product then rework and refine it so it works properly......

On my 30 year old top you can see daylight out the top of the quarterlites. Rain doesn't enter when moving but does a few drops when standing still. At this years Portland ABFM it rained really hard at times. After the first night hard rain the drivers seat was a little damp (direction of wind whipped rain). During first day (car show) it rained steady in the morning water entered passenger side down middle of side window wetting original bill of sale (copy). Not bad for a rather stiff old (but new looking) top and no leaking at seams. I do wonder what a new top would be like but it is after all old British design with no real sealing just glass pressed against vinyl.

Always thought mohair would be superior to vinyl but maybe not.
