Warning lights

Postby nick » 05 Dec 2009 17:00

Has anyone found a solution for the weak illumitation of the warning lights and turn signals? Like some better replacement bulbs. That whole thing is an interesting design. I removed the interior panels above the instrument cluster and found that all those lights are connected with fragile looking printed circuit. Interesting design, I must admit. Unfortunately, mine is damaged and the previous owner soldered a small wire to power the right turn signal socket to make up for a torn wire in the printed circuit. I was thinking of taking out the entire instrument cluster to see what other problems I could come up with but it appears to be a daunting task. I have most of dash facia base lose but can't seem to find a few sneak fasteners that are holding it in. The one that is really maddening is the XKC241PA (upper roll-glove box)just above the glove box. There is fastener on the inboard/windshield side corner that I can't find. Maybe it comes off with the facia base.

When I had my dash out I carefully cleaned all contacts on wires and plastic circuit and gauges using Brasso including wires on the bulbs and bulb holders. My dash lights are bright enough even in sunlight with top down. Not as bright as modern dash perhaps but not a problem either.

The instrument cluster comes out easily. To find where the screws are on it and dash/fascia refer to OEM manual which shows them all. You can download it from jclays website.

Shameless plug:
I intend to offer these as well - when I go for the next batch of instrument pod LED bulbs...

Another option. Carefully cut away the black lens that cover the indicator lights on the white cover. Get some theatrical gel in green. Cut to fit over the open hole and then use Scotch Magic tape to hold them in place, making sure to cover the whole gel with the tape.

You can see the bulb through the theatrical gel, so the magic tape will act as a diffuser. While I had the whole thing out, I also installed Odd's indicator buzzer. Works the treat when you are going 60 MPH down the highway with the top down and the stereo blaring!

I've heard that bypassing the dimmer knob restores a bit of brightness to the dash lights.

The ones I'm trying to brighten are the center warning and caution and the blue beam one on the right. Also the left/right flashers. In short, the small bulbs. I cleaned all the contacts but it didn't help much. With the boot down in daylight they are barely visible. I removed my panel and found a burned wire on the printed circuit. Soldered in a new wire and now the large green lights look pretty good except that two of them are burned out. Also got the brake light working. Small steps.

Odd,
I am looking forward to your LED warnibg light conversion.
The LED dash lights make the car much more pleasant to drive at night.
I just came in from replacing the Ignition and Oil Pressure warning lights in my dash. I just installed a new battery (Optima!) and decided it was time to get the ignition light working again. I did find it impossible (for me)to change the bulb from below and was happy to find access was good, if still awkward from above. While I was in there I changed the oil pressure bulb as well.
A small but rewarding job for a very cold Sunday afternoon![:)]

Cheers,
Rich
