BAL needles

With my engine needed a complete overall and a new cylinder head, I am now thinking of making it the best it can be (when it is all put together) and getting as near to the 95 bhp as possible. There is a guy on a scooter near to me and I want to be able to beat him of the lights with my standard 2lt lol.

I have k&n’s, new fuel pump, tubular manifold and carbs that have just been rebuilt. I was thinking of putting some new BAL needles in and wondered what the benefits are? Has anyone done this and is it worth it?

Hi Phil,

Not really a question if its worth it or not, more the fact that if you are running K and N's and an extractor manifold and especially if you have a ported head and high lift cam the BDM needles (standards) will start t run to lean at certain point in the range due to their thicker gauge and profile. The BAL's have a finer profile thus allo w richer mixture in the curve. They are a must if serious upgrades have been made otherwise it just wont run right.

According to a Triumphtune manual I have the recommendations are:-

Standard = BDM
+K & Ns only = BDM
+K & Ns and Extractor Manifold = BAL
+K & N's, Extractor Manifold, Fast Road Cam with Polish and Port = BCA

The quickest bolt on improvement is to get bigger carbs & free-flow exhaust headers. Mods to the cylinder heads will release any further power potential those bits will give you.

Tubular Manifold is an extractor manifold, usually arranged 4 into 2 into 1. Gives better flow of exhaust gases.
As opposed to the Cast manifold which is 4 into 1 and restricted.

I remember an article on Triumphtune in the mid 80's headed "Triumph Over Adversity" in one of the car mags. They claimed 130bhp from their low mileage 7 with the above mods and a through flow exhaust system. That's 25bhp on top of the std UK spec car. Go for it, beat that scooter!!

Yep, my 2 litre was 135 BHP on the dyno with a hotted head and high lift cam, all do-able.

135 sure would be nice, that is going towards the Sprint range.

regarding the high lift cam, does it improve all thru the rev range or does it make the engine more peaky?

In my case it delivers 135BHP @5200rpm with max torque of 176Nm @4200rpm
But it already produces max torque figure from standard engine (160Nm) @2800rpm, so not very peaky [:)]
I have BDR needles in that engines' carbs ...
