Need to check the lights out not lifting.Does anyone know what the hell the delay unit is for and where it is mine is a 1981 2.0l

Gary, if the lights come on when you operate the switch, but neither pod raises, then check out the switch in the dash first.

The delay unit is used to hold the pods up for a few seconds when you use the headlamp flash - also known as the Pecktron unit. It is in the fuse box at the back of the glovebox. Check the main switch in the dash first, take it out & check for damage or dirty connections.

if you use the search option you will find Lot's on the subject

But basically clean the connections in the engine bay just before it goes on to the pods

also the clean the connections at the switch

and finally the delay unit is called the pecktron unit and when you flash your lights

the pecktron keeps the pods up for about 7 or 8 seconds ( lights will only light up as long as you hold the stock back)

and it is located just by the fuse box at the back of the glove box

If the lights come ON - but don't rise - it's not the lighting switch! Start checking the wiring. If the lights don't come on - then indeed - check the switch - it is notoriously prone to failure, but supposedly responds well to stripping and cleaning.
I find the 'delay' etc is so pathetic - that it's just not worth 'flashing' with the stalk - by the time the lights rise, and you have to keep your hand on the stalk anyway to keep the lights lit - the need for the 'flash' is about 100 yds behind you! If you just briefly tug the stalk as on any other car - the lights tediously rise and fall - but are not lit - so it's more of a 'blink' than a flash!

Sorry bm have to disagree there if the lights come on and they don't rise it could very well be the switch as this was the cause on both my cars....

try wigglimg the switch about first then clean all the connection throughout and it's always best to have a spare switch that'll cost you Â£14 approx

one other tell tell sign was the turn the sidelights on then try the flash feature again this pointed for me anyway to the switch

give that a go

Last time I have an issue with my lights it ended up being the breaker unit that had gone. My lights would come on, but no lift. I changed the main light switch, cleaned all connections and checked all fuses/relays, before checking the breaker.

I was told to take out the little breaker unit that can be found in the fuse box and just connect the points with a cable. did this and the lights went up. That was my issue. May not be yours, but worth a go before you start buying new switched/fuses, that may not be needed in the end.
