Many threads on this subject - and almost as many different answers! General feeling is that a good 'Manual Transmission Fluid' works well - although the original oil was specified to be EP75/80.

Hi,
I use a good quality semi-synthetic x75W-90 seems to work fine for me.

Steph,

Don't be tempted to use or top up with EP90 hypoid oil as per the rear axle spec in the LT77 box. It'll be impossible to select 2nd gear when cold and difficult when warmed up. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF gives a good gearchange but not enough protection to the box.

Is that available in the UK, and if so, where from?

Cheers.

I've seen this stuff mentioned a few times, but does it solve the problem selecting 2nd gear that appears to affect a lot os "lesser" oils?

Cheers,

Mac

Never use anything but GM Liquid Gold or the Pennzoil eqivalent in a LT77 or R380! IMHO...

The LT77 takes 1.6 litres and the R380 takes 3.5 litres.

I've got a car with the LT77 which was filled with ATF right from when I fitted it, and it's gone through 2 owners since who used it as their daily driver for 20 years between them, without any problems at all, so I'd beg to differ on that. Now back with me and it's not the gearbox that's the problem.........

right, i would never use anything other than ATF. it is much more than capable to lube and protect the LT77

I have not been able to find Pennzoil MTF in the UK (even Googled) so use Dexron II ATF to spec M2C 33G (by Comma) as in the Handbook. It has not given a problem (yet!) but I don't do a high mileage.

Dexron II can't meet M2C-33G spec because that spec is specifically NOT Dexron type. I wouldn't use Dexron type fluids because they have friction modifiers in them which could affect the operation of the synchros. M2C-33G however doesn't have the modifiers in it, and doesn't get as thin when hot as the Dexron does, and that is what I have always used, and will continue to do so.

I use the Pennzoil Synthetic gear oil GL5. $13/litre Cdn. I still double clutch into second when cold but it's the best you can buy. It had regular gear oil in it but in Sacaramento you probably don't get much cool weather. Don't know how worn the second syncro is at 90,000 miles but it was an improvement. I believe Mildred who was an ATM proponent switched to Synthetic and she said it was better. Correct me if I'm wrong Mildred.
