I'll be doing some front suspension/steering work this weekend and one of the things I hope to accomplish is easier steering. I have a bad shoulder and turning this little car at low speeds bothers me more that I thought it would.
I believe the TR8's had PS but the chance of finding one of those units is slim and even if I do, hooking it up to the stock 2 liter may be a challenge.
Does anyone know of an aftermarket system or PS system from another car that can be adapted (not the high priced electric system that's out there - I can buy another TR7 for the cost of that system)?

The strut top bearings do make the steering lighter, dont pay £25 as they are from the British Ford Sierra(US Merkur) and cost just £8 from your local Ford dealer. Very easy to fit.
If you are in the US try the TSI roller bearing kit which is excellent and costs around $30. Ive used both with great results especially if you fit new ball joints at the same time.
The TR8 PAS rack will not go under the TR7 engine.

I put roller bearings in a few months ago, and they made a difference, but not all that much - just smoother, but not all that much easier.

Try oiling the steering column joints...My steering was heavy after a few years laid up, but over the last few years seems to be getting lighter, although I now look like popeye after the spinach !


If it isn't broken, I can still fix it

Put in bearings in strut, won't be like power steering but helps a bit. Grease what can be greased, steering rack etc. Oil what ever else moves, steering column u joints etc. With a little time, as the grease/oil works it's way in it will get easier. It will still not be power steering but will make you other cars with power steering seem over boosted. If that doesn't work might be time to trade up to a TR8.

I don't know of availability of used electric power steering mechanisms from other wrecked or absndoned projects but that's a possibilty.
