Axle bump stops/I feel the need for speed

Postby nofinchance » 30 Jul 2009 16:32

I think mine are missing.Where exactly do they fit and which ones do I need as Robsport list both large and smaall types[?]
Also I have driven alongside a friend to check and my speedo is approx 10 mph low.So My 50 is everyone elses 60.My car has a sprint engine,a 5 speed gearbox possible from an SD1 and standard BL alloy wheels. Is there a different drive I can fit or is the speedo just worn out?[:I]

You can change the gear wheel inside the gearbox that drives the speedo cable. Pretty easy to do.
First check what gearbox (number) you have, or where it originates from. Number starting with CL means it's from a TR7, 17A is from a Rover SD1. Other numbers are porssible ...

As for the speedo gears for the TR7 'box;
Black (23 tooth) for 3.9 rear axle
Green (21 tooth) for 3.45 rear axle

Do you have the matching 5 speed back axle (9" drums) - or is it the original 4 speed axle (8" drums)?

I had not thought of the back axle of course it is an essential part of the equation[:p].The car is an 81 so I presume it is a 5 speed axle.I fitted a propoer BL gearknob as the car came with a 'go faster' awful chrome thingy.I then found the tranmission tunnel has been enlarged and the stick cut down.I had to re thread it to fit the BL knob as it was bare the old knob clamped on.I have been told that it is a SD1 box however I will have a look for part numbers and get back to you all. Thanks steph[:X]

Hi Steph,
The speedo can be recalibrated by someone like Speedy Cables, you will need to remove it and send it away with some simple measurements of how many times the cable goes round for one wheel revolution ect, that what i had done with the axle ratio change i done years ago (3.08:1) poss someone may have fitted a different ratio in your or gear box.Speedies web site-

http://www.speedycables.com/

As far as bump stops there is a chassis break, early and late, if you phone Rob or Simon they will know from your chassis number which ones.
Cheers John

nofinchance,

Which bumb stops are you missing e.g. the Rear axle ones are in the chassic legs above the Axle or the stops for the trailing arms.

They fit in a hole in "frame" above the trailing arms. They usually disintegrate into a sawdust like substance and all that remains is what is left in the hole.

Check the tyres are the right size - 185/70's - any profile lower than this is going to alter the cars actual speed in relation to the one on the speedo

Hi Dale,
No problem mate, i should be on commision from the guys up at Bobsport [;)], going to fit a set of the poly bump stops myself when i have my axle out over winter. They also stock the little stops that go in the brackets on the axle for lower arm in poly as well already fitted those [:)]

My bump stops have disintigrated. I really never experianced a bottoming out condition though. Maybe the roads are better here.[:D]

Thanks Beans(and all). The pictures are exactley what I am seeing on my car except the rubber bump is not there[V].Those are the large ones then where do the small ones go? I need to fit both sets I think. My problem is not bottoming out but a sort of 'dunk' noise when moving off from a standstill.Doesn't 'dunk' again untill you stop and set off.I had the car up on axle stands to check the bolts and mountings as a total idiot fitted a new fuel tank for me and I am worried he has not mounted the axle correctly/safely.Nothing seems loose and all looks well.I undersealed the car while I was down there too.I will try and post some picces before the weekends out as I need the part numbers from my axle/box for the speedo trouble.I am onto the next job though as I have tracked down the missing bits to finish my change to tan interior.Only problem is the donor car is still in one piece! I have to strip it out myself.[xx(]What ever happened to customer service[:0]
