Can you help......... Please ?????

Hi guys. Got this little baby Sat last, and just going to work puts a smile on my face he he he . But got a problem with the front o/s light. It does,nt pop up , if lights are turned on, or if they,re flashed.I,ve only checked the two, three pin plugs inside the front of the engine bay, and cleaned them. Can anyone help ?? Cheers Tim

my lights seemed to stick occasionally cause the rubber surround kept moving , just a thought , im not very technical !!! but im sure the more techical ones on here will help u out , zoe

I have had major problems with my lights and paid mega to have an electrician sort them only for a total idiot mechanic to bugger them again ! I am gonna mend em myself and they seem to suffer from three or four things.
1.Bad earth
2.faulty switch
3.poor connections at any point in the chain/contacts in lift motor worn
4.Blown fuse or relay
Most of the above can be rectified by strip clean and make good.One thing you may not know is the TR uses short fuses not available in Halfrauds.I found this out after trying to ram in a standard fuse so don't damage the fuse box.Others here will help and know more than me I am sure as they have helped me .So good luck and if all else fails the lights can be wound manualy by twisting the knob under the motor.

Just be sure to keep your fingers clear of the mechanism - if it suddenly moves - it has been know to amputate some digits! There are various fuses and relays involved in lifting the headlights - good that the other one is moving ok - you can compare with that one to find out what's wrong. There is an excellent internet site guide to these lights - I can't find it at the moment - i'm sure someone will be along soon to point you too it!

If one works that eliminates some potential causes.
I would check the relay in the back of the glove box. You should hear 2 relays click when you activate the lights (one per headlight motor) If that isn't it it is likely to be a bad connection in the headlight compartment.
I find with my car that if I don't use the headlights for a while the L/H motor gets lazy. I try to cycle them every time I drive the car.

That's the idea -swap the relays over and see if the problem follows the relay. Could just be corrosion in the relay sockets - simply removing and refitting may 'cure' the problem - for a while.

Tim, there are 2 circuits in the lighting system, one to light the lights, & one to raise/lower the pods. The lift mechamisms have separate circuits each side.

If the light comes on but does not raise/lower, then the fault is with the lift mechanism. Glovebox relays have been mentioned, certanly worth checking these out.

Underneath the 3 pin plugs that you have cleaned there should be an earth wire bolted to the bodywork in the engine bay behind the headlamp panel. Take these off & give them a good clean, then refit. These problems are very often down to bad earths.

Check the relays behind the fuse box (in the glove box). If that doesnt help, check the earth points inside the bonnet at the front of the inner wings. After that it could be the light switch itself (very common) or it could be the Pectron delay unit (i've had that too) and as a last resort the lift motor is kn***ered.

Now i would run some wires across from the working light to the non working light just to check the lift motor is working, on that note does the light work by that i mean does it light up.

failing that swap over the relays next to the fuse box to check thats working fine.

If you are stuck in the meantime and need your lights, it may be worth mentioning that you can raise the pods by hand by using the black knurled knob on the underside of each unit. You MUST disconnect the electrics at the plug by the lights before you do this though.

These parts are getting old and the diodes are starting to deteriorate, so that can be a problems also.

my problem was in the "sealed" box that contains the diodes and contacts. The box leaked and all the components and leads were corroded beyond simply cleaning and had to be replaced. Don't be too ham-fisted when soldering, and be sure to use a heat sink on the leads near the diodes so they aren't fried. Not my favorite kind of maintenance.
