i was at TD Fitchett this morning, out of interest asked if they still had any new shells left expecting them to say 1 or 2.
They in fact have if i recall correctly 11 / 12 FHC and 4 / 5 DHC
although expensive there may not be much in it if a major refurbishment is taking place factoring in new panel cost labour jig time etc

if you factor in the earth's rotation, we are all speeding

How do they have these???? Do they have tooling for these cars???

Spoke to the them today after reading the first post, guy I spoke to reckons they have no more than 8 shells left out of a hundred or so they bought when production at the factory stopped. I asked if they were line reject shells or simply unused stock, he assures me they are the latter. They are in brown primer, no closing panels, have been dry stored and the quoted price for a FHC(unfortunately with sunroof aperture) is £2950 inclusive of VAT.

I was very tempted for a while, if I could get the price reduced a bit, which I did try, I may still be tempted.

I think they are all later shells (Solihull build 1980-81). I think there are slight differences with the earlier ones around the rear deck area.

Thats right John, if I was to proceed I would need to swap the roof skin to remove sunroof hole and also swap rear deck panel so as to have early large filler hole. I still think my own shell is very good but it just seems appealing to build a car from a brand new shell.

I'd still be worried that a 30 year old NOS shell could be hiding a bit of rot somewhere. There are many tales of shells in primer stored in the rain before finding their way to the production line. Theoretically your shell came for free.....

A firm in Hampshire was restoring an original TR8 about 20 years ago when I visited them. It had spent its life in Nevada and had zero rust although the interior had been severely sun damaged. Inside the sills, arches and turrets were 100% perfect.

"Stored in the rain"!! That was some Speke shells. These are Solihull shells. There is no rust. They have been dry stored and have good under sealing underneath. The only problem is if you want a hard top you would have to weld a roof on.
