Spark plugs and engine diagnosis

Postby jeffremj » 20 Jun 2009 22:03

After around 2 years and around 2000 miles, I thought it a good idea to check the sparkplugs. Here are one bank worth from my V8:

From these pictures I surmise that the carbs are synchronised well with respect to mixture, the mixture (and thus timing?) is OK (very light brown colouring) and I am burning oil (extra deposits on the 2 on the left) [:(]

Seem correct? Anything I have missed?

Well from what I can see the plugs look a good colour so I would agree that the mixture & timing is OK.

Is it just 2000 miles on a fresh engine? If so I wouldn't worry too much about a small amount of oily deposit, unless you are noticeably burning oil (exhuats smoke or frequent top ups?) or getting plug fouling. When I got my V8 DHC back on the road with a newly rebuilt engine, the very experienced gagrage who fitted the engine for me reckoned that the RV8 could take up to 10,000 miles to fully bed in rings etc.

The V8 uses lots of oil, but it also leaves lots on the ground as it has those old rope oil seals - it is a P5B type.
