It just goes to show that I shouldn't post when my blood sugars are below 60. Wait, it's 53 now.

Whilst I don't recall much seeing much profanity on this site personally I am from the Frank Zappa "school of thought" that 'words are only words'

More worrying IMHO are the murderous racial slurs found on this very forum here.. http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12944

I too believe that words are only words, and also opinions are just that too. If i see something i don't like (which is rare) then i'm old enough and ugly enough to ignore it. Murderous racist slurs? come on Steven, it's no where near that bad, if they were i should of been locked up years ago.

What's going on, everyone's gone bonkers! Maybe it's time this thread got put to bed.

One of the greatest assets of our forum is it's international nature. It can sometimes be a curse, when be talk about bonnets & hoods & such.

It may also cause some difficulties in areas like this.

What may have become accepted as general usage in one country may be considered to be profanity in another. Indeed, this could well be the case in different parts of the one country, & even in different professions.

When I was a navy pilot, we had yet to be silly enough to allow women on board as part of the crew, & the language was very "strong", every second word was a swear word. We could turn this off completely when ashore.

Today, my son tells me that our "lady" sailors can curse with the best of them, & the transfer from ship to shore is not so distinct.

I have also noticed that his English has slipped. He will now ask for you to pass him one of "them" light rods, rather than one of "those", a factor of common usage on board I'm sure.

For this reason I believe we may accidentally offend someone from a culture even ever so slightly different to our own. If I have done this, I'm sorry.

Still, sometimes it does require certain words for some of us to get the point across, at least in our minds. So, if I do use the occasional "DAM", [large hole in the ground, that holds water], & "BLAST", [the act of blowing up}, it's 'coss I aint got nough learning to no wot else to say.

See there you go again! In N/A a dam is a wall (earthen or cement) that holds back water. I will never under stand...aaaaaarghhh![:D]

Seriously, glad you're staying Clay. It is the international flavour of this forum that keeps it fresh and interesting and as long as we help each other and respect and have patience with those whose experience is less than ours, I think we accomplish something pretty great here.

Hasbeen is quite right, it's not the meaning or the interpretation of that meaning.
It's not what you say. It's more so, how you say it. Been telling that to my kids for years.
And the international meaning of words can also catch you out.
JClay, your use of the word fanny in the US is a bit different to the meaning here in Aus.

Cheers and Good Luck[:D]

... Using the word 'trannie' for 'transmission' isn't too clever, either!

Like owning a Wedge, maybe it's all about tolerance and understanding.

I've worked for several International energy companies in the last 15 years and worked with many who did or didn't have English as their mother tongue. We may have been speaking the same language but what was meant by the speaker and interpreted by the listener could be very different due to different cultures and backgrounds, let alone any language translations.

I saw a crazy arguement between senior managers which saw Brits, Australians and Americans due to different interpretations of one statement. All joined together and separated by a common language............

Dan, your OK, no need to worry [:)].
The post with the photos of those lovely naked lesbians [:p] has been deleted [:(].
The mods on this site were a bit slow in deleting them [^], as when I checked that post at least 10 times [:p] through the day, the naked lesbo's were still there [:)].
It's all been sorted for you [:D]. Don't worry [:D] [:D].

I missed the lesbians?

As this is an adult forum dealing with British cars I promise not to use language that would be inappropriate to use in a British pub.
I also promise not to use such language when surfing the Disney and My Little Pony forums.
