The drum is actually thicker than the rotor on the hub mounting area, so the rim will come inward.

Why so huuuge pictures TR8Coupe?
That picture is 2816*1580 pixels @ 180 ppi ending in a monstrous 1.5 MegaBytes!
It takes forewer to download for the more bandwith impared among us!
(And your sig file picture is just as bad! Clogging up the bandwith...)

It should have been no more than 850*478 @ 72ppi = 100 KiloBytes:
Image

and better yet, if you had edited out the unimportant parts it would have been just 80 kB:
Image

The edited ones load in no time! And are just as informative!

The biggest problem i can fore see will be the parking brake as need a cable to go to the rear before once again coming forward to meet up with the calipers (the calipers face towards the front of the car) Oh well thats the fun part of doing this sort of thing [:)]
Cheers John.

Hi Paul,
Hope to get up there in a week or two (prob next school half term, youngest wants to come with me! )They are going to install my 2.84:1 gear set. So will probaly leave the axle mocked up to see what they have or suggest. The calipers are VW i think prob MK 2 Golf, going to put a post on via a friend onto a VW forum with a picture or two to try and I.D them. Mocked it up to make sure wheels would fit them, didnt want to go to loads of work just to find the bl88dy wheels didnt fit!!!
Cheers john

John would you mind posting info such as rotor size, thickness, and would you happen to have the specs on the adapter/spacer for the caliper?

Can't save them all but I am trying!!!

Hi Yoke,
Will do at the W/E when i get back out the garage. The discs are Austin Maestro / Montego (front). The half shafts req turning down it a lathe to fit the I.D. of the discs. The adaptors are home made and are located using 3 of the 4 bearing retainer bolts, looking at Pauls only 2 are used. The worst bit seems to be the parking brake but will get there [:D]
Posted details about a year ago but 'the project' sort of got moth balled as these things do!!! Summer sort of got in the way!!
Cheers John

Hey John, does the h/brake need to be cable operated to satisfy the mot?
Only Demon tweeks and Burtons catalogues have hydraulic kits to convert
your h/b with its own slave cylinder.Does this slave operate the cable
or is it another complete hydraulic cicuit? They also list brake line
locks-a lever valve that locks hydraulic pressure to the wheels. This
i think is aimed at motor sport, grid starts etc.Whats your thoughts
with your testers head on?

See ya. Paul

For the MOT the car will need an independent emergency brake, the method can be cable, hydraulic or whatever but it must not use the same system as the service brake. most hydraulic handbrakes use a master in the rear brake line to operate the service rear brakes and would therefore fail the MOT. Unofficial like, i have seen someone drape the cables and mock them up to look like they might work and then attatch them to the hydraulic h/brake lever so "both work at the same time sir" but you might need an understand MOT man, or get stevie wonder to do it.

Hi Paul,
As Richards says has to be independent system for MOT [:(] Was looking at the system fitted to the new X5 at work the other day, that has an electric motor that pulls the handbrake on.They have hanbrake shoes inside the discs so cables are there and just so happened i changed one a week or two back for a program issue, it has its own control unit integral to the motor unit, now IF that dont go back under warranty?!!! Wouldnt buy one at £750 [:0] The similar system fitted to 7 series give an efficency readings better than most front brakes!!! Could activate via a relay and micro swich under the handbrake lever!!
Or could just use Golf cables, that sounds easyer [;)]
Cheers John

Hi Jclay,
Excellent drawings, the spacer is that to go between the axle and the bearing retainer, all i done was cut down and shape a couple of old brake back plates.
Mine use 3 bolts to secure to the axle as shown below,

Image

The centre hole and the outer two (at the end of the C if you like) mount onto the axle like so-

Image

The caliper carrier then fits onto the remaining two holes

Image

In the above picture also temp plumbed in a old master cylinder to check the operation of the calipers as they have been rebuilt.
Cheers John
