The sprint lump turned up this afternoon. Initial feelings are of disapointment. The engine came minus inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, There's a 2" diameter plug in the base of the block with two pipes coming out of it which looks like it went to an oil cooler!?!? anyway the engine has been tipped up so both the metal pipes have been squashed and have split, the dizzy has been smashed, and the sump has been dented and all this cost me £215.

Good points, what little oil there is on the dipstic appears clean, it comes with the flywheel and clutch, he threw in (literally) two SUs which seem to be full of water, erm i think that's about it.

Now it can either get far worse or far better as i start to strip it.

Not happy.

Gutted mate. To be honest it was £149 for the engine and £65 for the postage, not really sure what a used sprint lump goes for these days.

It's the damage that you weren't aware of I guess that's the most annoying. If it's any consolation, I've been there too, so understand exactly how you're feeling.

I don't think the £150 was far off the mark. If you'd bought the parts individually to do the conversion you'd have soon got up to that sort of money. However, if you were buying say used pistons, or a head, at least you'd have known its condition better.

Looking on the bright side, You don't need the sump anyway, and distributors do come up on ebay quite regularly.

After a lot of umming and errring i decided to buy Robsports engine they had for sale on ebay, complete with tubular manifold, leccy ignition, K&N filters, sports exhaust, basically everything i need to just drop it in. good chaps that they are even threw in a new timing chain. That sad excuse of an engine i bought the other day will just be for spares.

I'll have this car back on the road soon enough, can't wait to pick the engine up!

it comes with 3 months warrenty too which is reassuring. I'm going to pick it up sometime this week so no doubt i'll be spending a lot of time clearing a space in the garage for it. Was an oil cooler standard equipment on sprint engines?

the first sprint engine i bought has, where the oil pressure switch / sender is, two steel pipes of about 15mm dia and a rib around the end where the hoses would attatch. It looks like it would go to an oil cooler but as i've never seen where one would plumb into on a sprint engine i can only guess. Either way i think it might be better to keep the oil inside the engine, can't imagine i'd need an oil cooler anyway.

Either remove them and block them off. Or fit the oil cooler - but it's essential to have a thermostat in the line. Sorry, not got a photo of mine.

Thats the one!!! mine seems to be mild steel though, not cast ally like yours. if anything i'd say mine was a factory fit version?? i'm only saying that because of how cheap it looks compared to your version!

Make sure to choose one like this as it keeps the complete system under pressure at all times.
So no pressure loss when the thermostat opens.

Adaptor plate in Shaun's picture is the "standard" adaptor plate that comes with the normal oil cooler kits.

I'll probably be picking the Sprint conversion kit up from Robsport on wed, gotta phone them first and let them know. not sure if it's got the oil cooler connections on it but will find out soon enough. How does the Sprint version of the TR7 compare to the standard one? obviously there's more power but is it a massive difference?

A decent standard set up Sprint engine in a TR7 should easily produce 140 BHP (so fueling, breathing and ignition sorted properly)
