people misinterpret the safety of new cars, especially because of those euro NCAP tests , for example renault clio has 5 stars, BUT in the category of small city cars, 40mph into another small city car. And the "target" in the crash test is deformable, its not a worst case scenario like a solid wall.
against a 5 meter 2 tonne limousine or a lorry its not so safe.
in a crash with another car vehicle with lower mass is always in disadvantage. thats why from model to model mass of the cars has gone up , all those comfort accessories are not that heavy compared to added mass of the bodyshell.
problem with 4x4 vs regular car is that 4x4's hit in "unfair" places, completely avoiding the safety elements of a regular car, on the other hand, rollover in a 4x4 is much more dangerous because of all the empty space that you can wiggle around inside the passenger area.
as for a car for a new driver, i dont think it matters what car he/she drives as long as they use their head. Newer cars are definitely better (better suspension , better brakes, better mpg) , but if the driver know's he/she is driving a 20 or 30 year old car , and that they need to break a bit earlier , enter a corner a bit slower , as i said use their head.
safety of a tr7 can be improved with a better seat and better belts. If the bodyshell is sound it much stronger than most of the new cars, those front and rear bumpers are whats used on today's lorries [:D] , it wont fall apart in a crash, but that flat soft seat and narrow seatbelts could do some dammage.
you seen those rally crash video's , why cant they build all cars like that , the guy slides off the road into a ditch rolling over 5 times and hitting a tree, walks out cursing the codriver for reading the pace notes wrongly, and kicking the wheels of the car [:o)]
