I changed the belt that runs the alternator because it was old and began squealing very loudly. Once I did this, the squealing went away, but I noticed occasionally the battery gauge would run clear over to one side, and if I had the wipers on,they would go much faster,or if the headlights were on,they and the dash lights would get much brighter. Personally,I wish they would run fast and the lights would remain bright like that, but I get the vibe that it really isn't supposed to do that[:I] So I guess my point is,another possibility if/when that occurs is to check the belt tension or alternator...I'm wondering if something is going bad in there?

That sure sounds like the regulator in the alternator is going out. All the syptoms you describe would lead me in that direction. I would hook up a voltmeter and see what the output is. Of course you would need to keep it attached and watch it until the symptom occurs. I've seen it happen quite often with the Lukas alternators. Saw one on an MGB that got stuck at 20 volts, blew out all the bulbs, fried the electronic ignition and cooked the battery before the guy stoped running it. Mine acted the same & I swaped on a 63 amp Delco.

I think I had heard or read that as well, and a regulator should be less than a whole new alternator! I think now the only issue is,it seems there is a different one for non-AC cars vs. AC cars, and also from one range of VIN numbers to another. I'm also not 100% sure where to look on the actual alternator to find this serial number or whatever it is they call it,to match it up with a replacement. If anyone knows, feel free to speak (Speke? lol) up!
