The real answer for rear end control is a good tight limited slip diff! With an open diff - the torque feed through the rear wheels swaps about hopelessly from one wheel to the other and makes life very difficult indeed!
I have always wondered why Rover used essentially the same axle on TR7 and SD1 - but the 'saloon car' got a Watts arrangement and the TR 'Sports Car' got the 4 trailing arms. But if the bushes in the arms are uprated to polyurethane, and good firm dampers installed with stiffer and lower rear springs - it should be pretty good as it comes.

Here is a picture of the rear suspension on my TR7 race car. It was built in 1980 by a BL dealer who told me he had drawing of the rear end set up from BL.
It has parallel 4 bar links with two of the bars relocated on the body to make it parallel. The main swing arm is an aliminum bar with adjustable hiem joints ends. As a matter of fact all the bars have adjustable hiem joint ends. Coil over adjustable springs and shocks, adjustable rear sway bar that you can see at the very right hand side and a panhard rod that you can see just to the right of the shock. It also had a welded rear axle. The front end is similarly totally modified.
It looks really different from my stock TR8s, but very well thought out and with simple geometry. Can't wiat to get at it again this winter.

Cheers Frank. The wheels are 15x7 Superlites.

How much of the Watts Linkage bits on the SD1 can be used on the TR7? Can the diff back plate be swapped over? There are plenty of SD1s lying around over here.

Diff plate is identical.
Depending on the mounting points (L/R) you'll need to adapt the two linkages or make some new ones.

Some pictures of the front set up would be very much appreciated [;)]

Also some interesting details in your rear set up, very helpful ...

The front of the TR7 race car has a massive swag bar, coil over adjustables like the rear, adjustable camber plates on top. AP brakes with semi floating vented disks, calipers were off here since the TR8 rims that I had to transport the car wouldn't fit over them. The whole front is seam welded and tied into the roll cage. The cage extends on the rear of the car through the rear bulkhead and onto the floor on top of the frame rail about a foot forward of the rear lights. It also has a full square fuel cell where the spare tire used to go. In one of the pictures you can see part of the brake cooling duct work that comes from the one piece fiberglas front bumper/spoiler which weighs about 10 pounds.

You can also notice in the last picture that there does not appear to be any rubber bushings between the engine cradle and the frame. It looks like the car would be a bit of a bone shaker....it came with 10 inch Goodyear racing slicks and a set of racing rain tires mounted on another set of mags.

Just noting that camber adjustment mod would only allow very limited camber adjustment & doesn't factor in the effect of camber change on toe-in.

Given that the SD1 & TR7/8 diff plate is interchangeable, it should be fairly inexpensive to take the SD1 plate with its W/L assembly, shorten the rods & make new mounts to put it on a TR7 yes?

In fact can you take the SD1 mounts & use those since these are a listed part & presumably detachable?

If I rememeber correctly the linkage on the SD1 was bolted to the rear inner wings.

I haven't looked at the real thing lately but this is the Rimmers parts diagram. The LH bracket is different to the RH but I reckon 2 x CRC1862 could be made to fit.

Decided to go for adjustable coil overs on all four corners of 't Kreng (which means I'll be ditching the front ones I made myself a few years ago). I ordered them through the (local) Dutch firm AST-Suspension.
Only problem is that space for rear top mount is a bit limited ...

Image

But that shouldn't be a problem as they will make up a set to order
Also the rear suspension turret is a bit narrow ...

Image

Luckily they can supply rather narrow springs to sort this issue.
The set should be ready just before Christmas ...

Might even change the complete front suspension lay out while fitting the new (front) uprights

Looks good Beans. Much nicer than mine.

What caused the scratches? Did your cat get stuck in the wheel arch?

[:D] [:D] [:D]

It's my (rather rust free) spare DHC body shell.
I scraped of all the under seal with an assortment of chisels, hence the scratch marks

The coil over in the picture is actual for a Mk2 Escort from a friend. Handy for trial fitting, I need another top mount.
And yes they are very beautifully made, almost a shame to put them under the car [:p]
