Hello Steph

I have had many different type of Triumph, couple TR 4's, a Tr-6, and a couple of TR-7's along with the coupe that I am now working on. Each one has had there unique problems. With patience these were worked out.

Like the other have stated, step back a few weeks to consider things. You just spent all that money on a new transmission. It would be a shame to loose all that you have invested, time money and effort on a nice looking TR.

Like the other, I would in my leisure pull the valve cover, see if you do see some thing out of sorts. If not drain the oil and use a magnet to see if there is any metal in the pan. These things don't cost you any thing but may give an idea as what may not be wrong with the engine.

In any case what ever decision you make will be the right one.

Will you have a look to see what all the noise is first before getting rid of it? i personally think modern cars are hard to work on, not because of lectronic bits but because there's no bl@@dy room!

Tell me about it, I had to drop the LH front suspension just to remove the alternator on the Integra and it barely came out at that. Re not working on Miata's, there is only a couple of years that were good (early 90's I believe) the earlier ones had their own problem areas and the later ones are just too expensive. (my brother-in-law investigated it as he is looking for one) and in that narrow time frame the preferable ones are California cars as they came with a glass rear window in the ragtop. Some Canadian cars have been upgraded to Californian top. Spend some time investigating on Miata forums. As far a Z3's, BMW's are just too expensive to repair although other makes probably aren't far off. eg. BMW Mini's 5 speed transmissions cost $10,000 to repair (because they have to replace them). Some Porsches timing belts cost $2,500 for dealer to replace timing belt (periodic replacement). It goes on and on. Thanks but no thanks.

Sorry to hear about your probs with the 7. Maybe you'll feel differently about it in a week or two.

If not, and you're not as tall as me, 6'2", I'd go for the MX5. We had one on a 53 plate (Mk2.5) for 2 years and it was 100% reliable and fun as well.

It was also very safe. At 70mph on the M1, a Punto suffered a tyre blowout whilst overtaking my wife in the MX5. Basically it slammed into the Mazda making it spin across all 3 lanes and hit both barriers. Every exterior panel was severely damaged and the car was written off. Everything stayed put inside and my wife walked away.

Aircon definitely helps in the summer as engine heat comes through to the cockpit but not many of them have it.

Hope you keep the 7 though.

Adam

You either love the car or you don't but you should at least find out what's wrong with it.

Steph, after all the work you have done to the car, get someone to have a look at the engine. It may not be expensive to fix.
'Sods Law' says that a new owner will fix the engine and then have many thousands of miles of problem free motorinng.

Don't know about Sod's Law but has the makings of an Urban Legend.

"Did you hear about the guy that bought a Corvette for cheap because the owner died in it and they couldn't get the stink of a dead body out of the car."

"Yah, but did you hear about the TR7 owner in the UK who spent a bunch of money on it then sold it for cheap when it had a rough motor problem and the guy who bought it fixed it with a screwdriver and then drove it trouble free for the next 50,000 miles."

"Yah...like that's really going to happen. No ones going to sell for cheap before finding out what's wrong with it."

You don't want to become an Urban Legend do you?[:D]

It's always the same for me I have to pay top doller for things yet when selling I can't give them away[:I].Anyone want to buy any northern rock shares btw[:p].You are probably right if and when I sell my 7 the next guy will probably get a cheap car and mend it having yrs of trouble free motoring[:(!].I just have to stop myself here by not investigating the banging I will not be tempted to mend it[:p].Cuz if I do whats the next thing, and the next and the next. Not a week has gone by without one problem or another with this car and it has ground me down killing my enthusiasm[xx(].I know what you guys are saying it is an old car, easy to work on and needs constant fettling but I just can't take the rows it causes and the disapointment anymore.I just want to claw some money back and run from the whole mess. The car is now on E-bay and not as shaniedown said in the classifieds here 'some knacker from around the corner'[:(!]. Hey mayby I do still care.Anyway if it wont sell then I am stuck with it so watch this space. As arnold said "I may be back" but I will need more than your clothes and your motorcycle.I will need a fully equiped workshop,a trust fund,a welder, personal machanic....etc etc.
