Victoria British sells a replacement heater core that has the pipes attached. Perhaps the car you saw had one of those.

Has anyone Stateside got a photo of this heater matrix, the one that does away with those perishing (literally) rubber seals?

If available to us in the UK it would fix those bypassed heaters and get more cars out in the non summer months.

Note that the first time I replaced a heater matrix, it was with the original style and it leaked - after I had put the dashboard back together again - that is why I am good at removing heaters [B)] Moral, test the heater system before replacing the dashboard. IIRC, the car will start with the dashboard removed - probably not a good idea to drive it though [:p].
