Grinnal Hoods?

Postby jclay (RIP 2018) » 02 Feb 2010 16:10

So, did the Grinnal 2+2's have a folding top or a Roadster storage top?

The one in our club has a removable rag top. I get the impression from this car that some of Grinnall's work is a bit unrefined. I still haven 't managed to get some photos of this car but I'll be seeing it again this weekend.

But baby, I thought I was doing my best.

I will supply the hardtop if you do the rest of the work.

They were indeed a folding rag-top specially modified original design to fit. Never quite folded right though as there is no room for stowage or a hood bag.

Some and some![?]
Early cars retained the original hood and mechanism. But added at the modified pivot point are two articulating arms that allow the hood to either fit exactly where the standard car sits (ie `convertible`) or rotate back to sit on the rear deck between the back of the 2+2 seat and the fuel filler (`cabrio. style), and mine fits just fine, up or down-although rarely seen `up`![;)]. The standard hood bag fits when hood flush in two seater mode.
Some later cars seem to have odd contrivances that are basically a lift off frame with a poppered on ragtop-I suspect this uses a rollbar as its main support?
Hope this helps [:D][/font=Comic Sans MS][/green]

I test drove one of Grinnal's demonstrators.

The hood on the 2+2 in his yard was held on with poppers all round the sides and back. When the roof came down it had to be folded and placed in the boot

(could it be preparation for rides with the upcomming grandchildren now that those daughters are all married up eh [;)])

Btw any clue where those rear seats get sourced from?? And any reason for the cut-out in the centre???

If I understand the Q correctly-the grey carpet `cutout` you can see is because the rear seat floor is stepped up in the middle to clear the diff. housing-or rather the bum part of the seat sits lower either side of the diff. so that passengers are sitting lower in the car. The `bench` seat is cutout at the back and disguises this, as does the upright part. [8D]
The seats are bespoke `Grinnal` to do the job and there are at least two styles, one for static seatbelts (straight along the top as first black pic.), and one for inertia reel where the top centre dips lower to allow clearance for the belts that go through to their reel boxes that are mounted centrally below the rear deck panel. The seats were trimmed to match the interior trim. [;)]
