Ignition switch, which side should it be?

Postby Bobbieslandy » 17 Jan 2010 19:25

Hi all,

My 1979 (registered in Dec) FHC has the ignition switch on the left hand side, the same as my defender. Was this right? a friend of mine has a 1980 DHC and his is on the right. Very strange.

The lefthand side is correct, but suggest your car was built for a while before been sold. The vin number would be the best indicator to check it out.

was there a reason for the change from left to right? i think having the indicators on the right hand stalk is a good idea, means i can change gear at the same time! Well i will be able to once she's back on the road.

Strange. Mine is on the right, and the indicator is on the left. Novemner 1979 Canley. This is in Australia (we drive on the left side). I've been thinking of changing the stalks over if possible.

Indicator on the left with ignition on the right is LHD configuration. Sounds like factory got it mixed up on a few or the RHD conversion was not complete.

I have had 3 Oz delivered 7s, all 1980, & all ignition on right, &
indicators on left. As everything else is indicators on right, I
spend a fair bit of time turning the wipers OFF, when I wanted the
indicators.

It doesn't matter which car I'm driving, I can still get it wrong.
Thank god we don't have the same confusion with the brake.

Late '79 cars can still have the ignition on the left & wipers on the right. It was a time of transition so you could have either depending on the build date. Some cars hung around for a while before they were registered. My 1980 TR7 was all original and had the ignition on the left.

I got the NOS indicator and wiper stalks from "Auto Spares Galore" Burwood Hwy, Fern Tree Gully. The grumpy old bugger that runs the place wont bother to try to look the parts up so you'll need to take the old bits in and drop them on the counter so he can visually ID them and you'll need to explain that you want the opposite sided units.</font id="Comic Sans MS"></font id="size2">
