Number of TR7's still on the road in the UK

Around here there are few TR7/8 on the road but I suspect there a lot more in garages, barns, sheds, under tarps, etc. that have been taken off the road to await that day when the owner has more time (which seldom ever comes) to start the restoration. I suspect the same is true for the UK as well.

My New Year resolution is to have all three cars (all fhc) MOT'd and usable at once. So far 2 have MOT, 1 still to go... All are already insured (group policy). Problem comes with the road tax.. Since I already have a modern daily driver, and none of the TR7/8's are tax exempt it's all looking a bit expensive!

Are any of the TR7's in Britain old enough to qualify for tax exempt status? And just why is it not a rolling exemption?

I was talking to my (21 year old) daughter about death duties (of all things) just the other day.. she was gobsmacked to find out that we even have a tax on dying...

it was a rolling tax exemption up until 1997, i bought a 1973 Mk1 escort boasting to my mates i'll be enjoying free road tax. Anyway, Labour got into government and realised how much money they'd loose (or possibly it was something to do with how many old polluting cars would be encouraged to be kept on the roads) so they stopped it and said any car registered on or before Jan 1st 1973 would be tax exempt. my Escort was a few months out. Hated Labour ever since! Anyway to answer your question if there's any preproduction prototype factory hacks etc laying about which were registered before jan 1973 then yes. As i don't believe that's the case then unfortunately the best us TR7 drivers can hope for is a pay as you drive scheme! that's assuming you don't use your daily driver for a 100 mile commute every day.

no sadly tr7s dont make the tax exempt grouping in any way shape or form, gutting to say the least, your not even safe with 73 cars as its not jan 73 its mid month so some 73 cars are tax exempt and some not, the question is always coming up in practical classics....

am pretty sure there are still one or two tr7s in the writers garages in the mag too, i know john simpson had at least 2 at one point, was chatting to him in the nec about mine...... and was also chatting to the mechanic paul that helps edd china out on wheelers dealers and he said he used to race tr7s......

Don't we already pay that as well as road tax with our inflated fuel prices lets face it the more you drive the more the goverment get any way[:(]

I guess we do "pay as we drive" if you put it like that. I just find it gutting to fork out a couple of hundred quid every year for a car which barely gets out of the village! When it was on the road i wantet to use it but also wanted to keep the mileage down.

"Cars built before 1 January 1973 are eligible for 'historic vehicle class' and therefore exempt for paying road tax in the UK" Heritage motor center.

I've read a few letters in practical classics where the car was registered in mid to late 1973 and in one case in a land rover mag the car was registered in 1974!!! they were told to check the build date as it may be eligible for tax exemption, I always thought it was Jan 1st.

As long as it's built (and provable, Heritage cert etc.) before 01/01/1973 it will qualify.

I think there maybe 1 or 2 prototypes that may have been built in 72/73?
