air cleaner

Postby nick » 08 Jan 2010 23:05

Rimmer shows pre 1979 TR7s with and air cleaner box that has two hoses for intake air as opposed to an opening in the later cars. Do these hoses go out of the engine bay into cold air? Are these adaptable to the later cars?

One must always remember there are differences twixt the cars built for different countries. As Rimmers is a Home Market firm, it's focus is on Home Market cars and customers. For folks in foreign countries, we must be mindful of our cars will being different in various ways.

For the North American market, we have the Z-S carburetion and an air cleaner with a built-in warm air vacuum motor and spigot for the hose. Our main air intake is rectangular in shape. The Home Market folks instead got the S-U carburetors and no warm air system until years later. They got two spigots with short hoses that lead to fresh air next to the radiator. This gave the Home Market cars problems with carburetors icing up in very cold weather. Since England is well known to have very cold weather, one must wonder why it took so long for the factory to add the warm air system. It's not like they didn't know how or have the parts already on the shelf. I suspect it was just a way to be cheap.

In answer to your query, yes, the outer air cleaner box is an easy clamp on to the North American air cleaner assembly. If you can find one. If you are seeking to have a cold air sustem on your engine, please use the 'SEARCH' function for my article on the cold air intake. It is quite economical and works well.

Yes Mildred is correct....US cars came with the rectangular snorkel-a/clnr housings. England cars had the twin inlet snorkels. (which IMHO look better than ours)
