Having gone blind and then enduring 15 eye surgeries, I can say, "Protect your eyes at all cost!"

ps,

and dont weld in a t-shirt, cover up all of your skin,

i managed to "tan" my forearms with TIG-welding.

As in "tan" i mean red and skin starting to flake , like from a sunburn

I can see what people are saying about the most expensive that you can afford, but as I am only planning on using mine now and then, I got a gassless one for around £100. The pics early in the post are good and for most places I am going to patch, the splatters and excess metal can be cleaned up. When I get more into it I may buy a better one, but for what I want (areas that can be covered up) I am prepared to grind back the excess/splat.

Most of us are not got to be professionals at this, just do what we need to to get buy.

Never wear contact lenses either if you are welding, if you are even near to someone welding they can get stuck to your eyeballs[B)]

I bought a Clarke E100, does the job for me, easy to get parts from Machine Mart nearby.

All good safety advice here, anyone would think that MIG welding was scary! I'd also recommend wearing a old cap and overalls when welding underneath the car. That spatter can really smart on your scalp.

The one garage tool that really scares me is my angle grinder, even with the appropriate gloves and goggles. I'm still waiting for my first grinding or cutting disc to break up.

Nah, MIG welding isn't scary......

.........provided you protect your eyes with a lightning fast auto helmet, don't wear contacts, tee shirts, flimsy clothing or anything combustible, DO wear asbestos gloves, boots, apron, helmet, underpants and socks, watch out for welding spatter, flying sparks, suntan, sunburn, eyeburn and heartburn, DON'T breath the fumes...in fact don't breathe at all and lastly, don't wear anything asbestos - it's deadly !!

Oh Lor !!

d'y'think I'll be ok in this...

Noting the comment <i>'in fact don't breathe at all' </i> in the post above, refer to the article in the last TRDC mag re poisioning from using the wrong cleaner before welding. Frightening!!

I also second, third or whatever the point on the fast helmet and not using it. I have been guilty of a quick weld without, especially when you can't see what you are doing with a fixed filter. I suffered for days and my eyes, which were good, are now a bit fuzzy. Might be age but they have gone rapidly downhill since I started welding on the TR.

I got a quick change welding mask from the welders warehouse at last years restoration show, worth every penny and so much easier to weld with it compared to the fixed lens. I also bought a welders jacket at the same time for when I work under the TR7 because I have had some seriously hot welding blobs go straight through my fireproof overalls and shirt.
When you are lying on the floor and have a red hot lump of metal burning its way through your skin it tends to alter your perspective on protective clothing.[:D]
