Thanks for all the comments, some are rather sobering. I only got to thinking of all this a day or two ago, it has never bothered me before and I have been in and out of convertibles from being a little boy.

Maybe it is all a symptom of todays Health and Safety being drip fed into us all.

The best defense is to drive within your limits & don't take unnecessary risks. Also don't forget to pull over & stop when you see anyone coming towards you. [:D]

From what I can gather, the crash tests on new cars don't seem to include rollover scenarios even for convertibles. The good news tho, for newer cars at least, is that some convertibles are safer in a crash than the sedan equivalent. This is due to the stiffening in the sills & stronger windscreen frames.
