Convertible Roll over bar question?

Postby Dave Dyer » 09 Dec 2009 18:22

I'm thinking of possibly making a roll over bar?? Has anyone else made one?

But what I need to know is the dimensions of tubing used and where it bolts to the bodyshell? If anyone can help with that, that will be useful. What would be even better would be a complete scale drawing!! But alas we don't live in a perfect world! So any info really would be a start [:)]

Cheers, Dave

i meant that you use the same dimensions of the tubing as a homologated rollcage (if you want that the roll over bar has adequate strength),

it should be anchored to a place where multiple bodywork panels meet together so the load is distributed instead of pulling out a single panel.

tube should be welded to a thicker plate first,
then the plate welded to the bodywork panels so that in a case of a roll over the tube doesn't just penetrate the bodywork panel.

and a rear braces are required so that the roll over bar doesnt just fold down under load , you want a "tent like" structure

something like this

May as well just buy one on ebay - as already suggested! If you are intent on making one - just size it to fit inside the folding roof - I have a slight struggle to get my roof supports up and over mine - but it does fit.

Marko, Thanks for the info/help, its good what you say, things I hadn't even thought of.

Bmcecosse, If I can buy one for a good price (Gaz, you got one hell of a good deal!) then I will, but they usually state 'pick up only' and live miles away! So I thought 'that will make a good winter project!!' but your right, make it so the roof folds over, that will give me a starting point. What diameter is the tubing on yours ?

Thanks, Dave

Just don't do what someone did to a Ford Bronco that Stacey David was restoring on his previous TV show "Trucks". They made their roll bar out of PVC pipe. What a laugh.[:0]

Hi Chaps,

Can anyone give me the tube diameter? There must be a lot of you who have the roll over bar, should only take a minute to measure it!! Please!

Where I work I've spotted a tube bender in the mechanical department, so thats planted the seed for the project!!

The roll bar in my TR8 Coupe is a SCCA specification. It is 1.75-inch outside diameter with a material wall thickness of .120 to.125-inches. The FIA TR8 Homologation papers require 1.5-inch outside diameter with a wall thickness of .108-inches. Now for the fun part. The bottom mounts of the roll bar are inward towards the center of the car with 3 bolt holes on a plate that positions the tube against the inside of the body. The next mounting point, which is OPTIONAL is about 8 to 10-inches up on the convertible reinforcing frame next to the seats and below the top frame connections with 2 bolts. The last mounting point is the diagonal brace for the top of the roll bar. It is either in the inner wheel well or right next to the gas tank. There is a body seam at this are that you can be inboard or outboard of it but remember closer to the inboard seam the better. You do not want to drill and hit the gas tank. All the bars I have seen have for the bottom connection plate and the diagonal connection plate 3 bolts with a plate on the backside with the exception of the bottom which is right at the rear lower control arm connection area.

Michael,
Much appreciated for your info, its just what I need to get things started, Cheers and thanks.

Gaz, nice car and nice idea.... but I'll pass on it!! But does look good!

There never seems to be a good response when asking for help to make something, I think along the lines of, if I can make it all the better!, I made my body roller (rotisserie) and even made a towing dolly!

Cheers, Dave

I will take pictures of the connection points but they will be for a coupe so the middle and upper portion of the main hoop and diagonal braces will be in different locations so you can raise and lower the top/hood frame.
