Made it.........almost

Postby nofinchance » 05 Jul 2009 15:37

I broke down at coventry on my way to billing in my wedge 'bagpuss' (saggey and a bit loose at the seams)[:)].The points burnt out and the AA man did not have any in his van so got towed home.I did make him remove the propshaft from the gearbox so today I have put that back on and fitted luminition electronic ign so no more points and no more problems[;)].I have the magnatronic type and even though the instuctions make it sound like splitting the atom it was a simple job.You unscrew and chuck the points and condensor away.screw back down the earth wire that was attached to the condensor in the dizzy body, attach a base plate where the points used to be,attach the magnatronic device to that ,slip on the pick up and rotor arm and connect to the coil.It was almost easy! I have a little tip if it helps to get the screws into the dizzy to assemble it up I hung them on 5amp fuse wire and lowerd them into place then screwed them in.The screws were only two threads long very tiny and as you know the dizzy is in a hard place to work on.Saved me dropping them and my magnetic screwdriver was not only too short but was sticking to everthing on the way to the screw hole[:(!] My wire absailing screws worked for me!

I like the fuse wire trick. I usually use a thin slither of cardboard
with a hole punched in the end....

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font size="2">Good Girl! Sorting it yourself, you should be feeling pretty good about yourself! Not only did you successfully fit the ignition system yourself but came up with a clever solution to the problem of placing those rotten little mongrel screws! Keep up the good work! Sorry I missed the show.Still the time was not wasted I was advised to remove the distributor and work on the bench however I managed with it in situ.It was a stretch though to bend right over to that excellent mounting point[xx(].A well designed place for a service item to be[:p].I should not have to go there again for a while so job done.I did ask my useles garage to fit the electronic ignition while he had the car however he returned the bits!!!!The absailing screws is one of my dads ideas he was a agricultural engineer for many yrs and became quite resourceful. You could say he was 'outstanding in his field' [:D].
