My turn

Postby RUDDY » 15 Mar 2009 15:18

I suppose it was only a matter of time but I thought it might have waited until I got on the road, I have the wink, or the alternating flashing wink. Side lights work ok on the dash switch, flash works correctly on the column switch, one pull, up they come, flash and go back down, however when the lights are turned on using the dash switch one comes up and while its on its way back down the other comes up and this merry dance continues until you knock them off.

Although it amused me for a while and my wife no end are there any easy fix pointers ?

cheers, Paul

i would first try a different dash switch, mine gets dirty just from sitting a few weeks and then gets up to all sorts of mischief.

Since the headlights works ok with the 'flash' - it's certainly not the motors etc. Could be switch - or relays ?

Well Paul, to start with I think it's definitely worth cleaning up those connectors behind the lights in the engine bay, & the earths in there.

If that does not solve the problem, remove the master switch & check/clean the connection pins & the contacts inside.

Hopefully this will sort it, but if not let us know!

The contacts in the master switch are copper and as such will corrode easily especially with current going through them. I put on a thin flim of dielectric grease to keep them from corroding. So far so good.

Paul, definately check those connectors in the engine bay, just
behind the lights.

When I put the 8 back on the road 14 days ago, after 9 months off,
at the painters, we spent some hours cleaning all the circuits, to
get the lights working.

It then spent 4 days at an engineers, as my state, [queensland]
demanded the car be re-complianced, [with all its mods] before they
would register it here. It was previously registered, & complianced
in Victoria.

I picked it up at night, & when I got home, the left light cycled up
& down, continuously when I turned it off. I reached into the engine
bay, & shook the handfull of wires behind the light. The cycling
stopped.

A couple of days later I turned the lights on & off, on the way to
town. The left light cycled up & down. I put the left wheels off the
bitumen, into the dirt, on the side of the road, at 100 Km/H, &
after a couple of bumps, the cycling stopped.

Obviously I still have a bad connection, somewhere up front there,
causing the problem. I will clean them all, again, when I get a
chance, & expect that to fix things. Cleaning these same connections
has brought light to the front of the 7, when its lights have risen,
but remained dark, previously on ocasions, before I had them
relayed, at the front of the engine bay.

I'd recommend replacing all those bullet/sleeve connections with modern male/female block types.

Thanks for all the help and advice, nipped into the garage this morning after reading all the possibilities, wiggled some wires under the headlamps, tried them, and back to normal. When I get a bit more time I will clean all the joints.

Happy TR owner again [:D]

cheers, Paul

The weather pak connectors used on GM vehicles is a possible answer to corroded electrical connectors http://weatherpack.com is a good place to start.

I often thought about going to the local auto wreckers and getting some sealed connectors off some Toyota or what ever that could be soldered in place of our open connectors to get a reliable seal against the elements but where's the fun in that?[:)]
