Just a reminder, car should be store with a full tank to minimize condensation of water in tank, the more air the more water vapour.

The last thing you should do is hold the spark plug while the engine turns over! At best you'll get a nasty shock, if you've got heart problems you'll probably kill yourself! Try WEDGING the plug against the block with a piece of wood - much safer. [;)]

the engine block is always a better conductor that your body. people get shocked when they get scared when the engine starts to turn over and they take the spark plug of the block , or they take the spark plug off when they see that there is spark and the engine is still turning.

just hold on to plastic parts and wait till the engine is still

If the engine is spinning over OK it should not be the starter motor. The points and timing are the normal culprit. Have you checked the spark at the plugs, and is the fuel good? I have found that IC engines do not run well on water (and it amazing how often you take the oulet hose off the pump to find a mixture of water and petrol squirting if a car has been standing).

Hiya Dave.

I think you now need to got through this methodically. Print off the post and go through all the jobs listed.

I wouldn't start spending your hard earned on leccy ignition until you've got the car running again.

What I'd do to get it going is.

1. Fully charged battery.
2. Remove plugs and clean off
3. Remove dizzy cap and clean(?), possibly dry out if it's got damp.
4. Dry clean off points faces with a piece of dry rag/card.
5. Clean and dry off rotor arm - then refit all that EXCEPT the plugs.
6. Take the inlet hose to the fuel pump off (get ready to plug the hole in the pipe as fuel should flow out.
7. Stick a length of pipe on the fuel pump inlet pipe into a petrol can of new petrol.
8. Check and possibly clean the low tension connections to the coil.
9. Crank the motor over with the choke on (is the choke working?) for a 'good while'.
10. Stick the plugs back in, connect the HTs and start it up on the new fuel.
11. Whilst it's running and before you can of fuel runs out swap the fuel pipes back over and let the now warm engine run on the tanks fuel.

I suspect the longer you leave this the older the fuel is getting in the carbs/tank, and if you have old (ish) fuel with water(?) in it in the tank, then on these cold days, the car becomes less and less likely to want to start and run.

Hope this is helpful.
