Rear Trailing Arms

Postby mitchelltjohn » 08 Jan 2009 22:14

one of my rear trailing arms split in two just ahead of rear bush last week. Result of slowly traversing a speed hump! Is this a common occurance? Has this happened to anyone before? Anyone any experience of make a claim?

Never been unfortunate enough to claim against that, but the trailing
arms design traps water, and water promotes rust.Add road dirt and time,
and metal fatigue results.
You can improve the arm by welding a strip on the open top to stop
water/dirt laying in the channel.

See ya. Paul

Easy and relatively cheap to replace as well. Get the supplier to push some poly bushes in for you and supply new bolts and your away. Changed both mine in an hour.

Hi,

Was that one of those "separated" humps that can be straddled? My single pipe system and / or lower V8 radiator mount always grounds on these unless I drive one side of the car directly over them. The full width ones aren't so bad.

One of the London councils made the local TV news (might have been Islington) when it was found out that most of their speedbumps were above regulation height. A classic Mini Cooper owner was going to sue them after losing his second exhaust system to them. It might be worth measuring the speed bump height and checking the regulations. They might be on the web somewhere.
