Does towing kill a 5 speed ?

Postby alex79 » 30 Dec 2008 20:07

About two years ago, I got a ’79 DHC that had been asleep for about 12 or so years ago. What happened was the clutch died, and the previous owner took it to a transmission shop, where they pretty much killed the car. I found the clutch lever arm that had the pivot ball clip cut off and the release bearing sleeve broken, apparently when the new bearing was put on with a hammer! The previous owner took the car back where it slept all these years. I can tell not all of the bolts were put back on (they were in a bucket) and those that were put on were loose (the shifter pretty much fell off).

Now, here is my problem. I towed the car to my place, about 60 miles away going a steady 50 mph with the 5 speed in neutral. I later found out that the 5 speed has an oil pump and should not be towed with the rear wheels on the ground and drive shaft connected. Since I’m going to pull the engine/tranny anyway, what should I look for damage wise from the tow?

Mildred knows much more about these LT77s than I but I'll take a shot. Only damage I would possibly see would be the bushes in the gears that ride on the mainshaft. That & possibly the brgs on the ends of the mainshaft. Best to pull it apart for a look-see. Good news is there are still a lot of these boxes around.
