knocking/clanking noise from engine

Postby higgie » 30 Dec 2008 08:59

Hi all TR fans, may i wish you all a Happy TR New Year.

Plese help, i have just finished replacing the head gasket on my 2.0L TR7. The engine when running sound fine, tickover is good, when revved also sounds great ( no knocks clanks etc), however when driving and the engine labours (up hills) i can hear a knocking/clanking noise coming from the engine, it dissapears when i change down a gear. Could anyone pls offer advise as to what it may be. Thanks in advance Higgie.

Sounds like it's pinking. You need to retard the ignition.

Best advice is to start with re-setting the points (unless you've just done them - or it's electronic of course), then adjust the timing as per the manual.

Alternatively, just retard until it stops pinking.

Yep absolutely, otherwise known as someone throwing gravel down your exhaust manifold.

Retard ignition as above, but also look at the plugs, if they are white then its running lean and wants richening up.

Ignition is most likely though ;-)

Higgie, how old is your petrol.

This modern stuf goes off pretty quickly, these days. It can drop
it's octane rating by 10% in a couple of months, so if it took you a
while to get around to replacing that head gasket, your petrol could
be your problem. If in doubt, change it.

When the head gasket was done was the head resurfaced? If so maybe a bit to much has been taken off. And who knows how much may have been taken off in times past by previous owners?
Too much taken off the head will cause an increase in compression ratio, what is the octane rating of the fuel you are using? Fuel with a higher octane rating would help. Another thing is are the sparkplugs the correct heat range for the car? If the compression ratio is higher than standard the spark plugs a heat range or 2 colder than the factory specs might cure it.
