Refitting FHC rear window - any hints?

Postby macmattom » 14 Dec 2008 22:38

Hi,

Do any of you have any tips for refitting the rear window of a FHC that won't cost me a mint?

Cheers,

Mac

Put the rubber around the galass, then thread a piece of string all around the rubber in the groove. place the rubber into the bottom of the aperture and feed the rubber in by pulling the string from inside the car. If youre near Sheffield Il do it for you FOC.

Chris is right. You might want to read the instructions for installing a Spitfire windshield as the process is basically the same.

Anyway, another question - I have a bit of trim that appears to fit nicely around the top of the rear window aperture - does that go in after the window is fitted or when fitting (does it actually go there at all)? I have had a look but remain confused? Any photos would be greatly received. Thanks very much.

ps - got the steering column and heater unit fitted today - result.

Rooflining should be glued to the top of the rear window opening.
On the bottom there should be a ± 3" wide strip of trim material that should also be glued in place before the window is fitted.

In both cases the trim material goes over the lip over which the window seal fits.

Wish me luck!! (I've decided the bit of trim I can't identify doesn't need to go back in so I'll leave it out & hope for the best). Thanks for your help.

Chris,

That is the way that S&S (Stewart & Stevenson) installed huge windows in their Marko Polo and MB buses!

Same procedure on all the glass, with a rubber gasket, that I have run into. A spray bottle with soapy water makes it go a bit easier.

<font face="Comic Sans MS"></font id="Comic Sans MS"><font size="5"></font id="size5"><font color="blue"></font id="blue">Well, it's in. No thanks to me though; a mate at the motor club has done a few windows before and helped me. It's easy when someone else is doing it for you!! He used a thin strip of wire around the rubber seal and pulled the seal into the frame that way. I'll let you know if it leaks when I wash it. Thanks everybody.

Hi guys,

Just trying to tackle this at the moment and wondered if it needs more than 1 person or can it be done on your own?

If it needs 2, anyone around North Tyneside / Northumberland with a spare pair of hands?

Doesn't need an expert, wife or girlfriend gently pushing as you pull the string.

It's not that hard, but it may be best to use a mate to help.

That is if you want to keep that wife or girlfriend.

With a wife, it really is cheaper to keep her, rather than pay maintenance, after your remarks, if that window gets broken.
