Or something like this (the car on the trailer of course), took the engine out and flogged the rest ...

My plan for my latest wedge, this 1979 TR7 conv, was to do a Sprint conversion. Im starting to think I may be better off waiting till I come across another deal on a TR8. Love the 8's, but ws hoping to do myself a Sprint this time. Its just a cool looking engine. Sounds like it'll cost me more than if I wait for another TR8[:(]

Hi,
I spent a lot more on mine than i will ever get back for it BUT i have no intention of parting with it for little while [8D]
There is always at least one converted TR7 V8 on Fleabay at any time and is normaly a cheaper way of getting that V8 feel [8D] BUT if a bad conversion can be a money pit for sure [:(]. Bobsport and the lads up at S+S always seem to have at least one or two, both supply kits to carry out the job yourself.
Personaly, if you have the cash (or can beat the current credit crunch!!), time and ability to do it saftley yourself then you build the car you want, within reason, and not something some else wanted. Plus you have got to go along way to beat that feeling the first time you take it out [:D] IMHO of course.
Cheers John

The problem is jclay won't find anthing like that over on this side of the Atlantic. A club member has one but he got it from New York were it had previously come from Switzerland. (It's LHD.)

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Century Gothic, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">

Cost of conversion from a standard 2Lt: V8 or Sprint?
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">This from my old website circa 1997 (incl. prices!):

A 'complete' S/H 16 valve head for about 100 pounds sterling
New 16V head bolts and studs (reuse old ones if money a problem)
An inlet manifold/carbs and air box for about 30 pounds sterling
An exhaust manifold for 200 pounds (this is a new 4 branch - the Dolomite version is unuseable)
+20 thou Sprint pistons (you can use the old TR7 items, and machine new valve cutouts - downside is low compression)
Sprint timing cover, gears, chain and tensioner (100 pound sterling)
Sprint crankshaft pulley (10 pounds sterling)

End quote.

As your TR7 will probably have low compression pistons, you might be able to drop the Sprint head straight onto the TR7 block and not have the valves hit the pistons! YMMV!!

When I did this conversion I re-used the TR7 pistons and had cutouts machined. I re-used the TR7 SU carbs. I used the Sprint airbox backplate with the TR7 air temp thingie added. I used the TR7 airbox outer to get warm air for winter.

So, if you want it dirt cheap, take the TR7 head off, remove timing front end. Fit a water connector to rear of 16V head to mimic the 8V, fit 16V head making sure no interference (no chance with UK TR7 pistons!), fit 16V timing front end incl. pully. Fit 16V inlet manifold, fit 8V under carb water feed for heater, etc to 16V manifold, fit TR7 SUs, fit special 16V exhaust manifold , merge 16V and TR7 carb linkage (a bit of brazing) and drive away [8D]

Don't forget the 16v head (Sprint or Dolomite Sprint) was not imported to North America as it didn't meet the emissions requirements and they didn't have the money to make it meet them especially when they could drop in the Rover V8 for the performance and meet the emissions standards. That means that the head and auxillary parts would have to be shipped from UK, etc. quite expensive. Similarly any donor car would have to be imported from UK or Europe and if that is the case it would probably be to good to break. We can't go to local auto wreckers and pick one up.

Since I am highly modifying the car anyway, the best bet for the US is to do the V6 conversion. If I decide to keep it Triumph, I will go with Ted's modified head and a good header and maybe HC Pistons.

My take on this was that the EGR flow that the 8V had could not be replicated on the 16V - as mentioned in my old website [:)].

If you look at this ebay item (170276318085) you can see that 16V heads go for around 25 quid - I paid this 20 years ago! All you need is the postage .....

I just seen...Rimmer Bros has a 16v Sprint package they sell for about $2200.00 US. Reconditioned full engine w/Sprint head. Header, brake upgrade, etc. Didnt look to see what shipping would be. I would do this, if i had the cash to blow. I just like the look of that 16v engine [8D]

...of course, a V8 is always fun!
