Buzzing from gear knob

Postby prlee » 09 Nov 2008 16:16

I get a vibration/buzzing from the gear stick mainly when in 4th gear, I know this is not from the gear knob and it goes away if I put side pressure on the gear stick.

Any ideas how to stop this?

This is on a standard 1981 DHC - mileage 72K

Also check the anti-rattle-spring in the pivot point of the gearlever and look for wear signs from this spring in the alloy tail piece where the gear lever sits.

Gaz, did you get yours worked out?

Priee, how good is your grarbox mount, & is there a round spacer
between the mount, & the gear box?

Old oil soaked mounts can sag a long way, & that, or the spacer
missing can let the box rest gently on the subframe, at rest, or
while changing gear.

The noise caused can be just an annoying rattle, or as bad as
sounding like the gear box bearings falling out. Worth a look.

Thanks,I will try lifting the gear stick.

Is the anti rattle easy to get at?

No Pete, just remove the gearstick knob, then gaiter, then the panel
under it. This gives access to the top of the extension.

Push the 2 spring fingers out to each side, & the gearstick lifts
out. Careful, it's at this point, as you lift the stick, that the
spring, & its plastic end go flying, if they are still there. Only
one of my 4 TR7s has still had the thing, when I got the car.

Even with the spring missing, 2 of mine didn't rattle.

I had this same (sounding) problem with my TR8. Turned out to be a washer I used on the bolt that holds the shifter retaining-cap on, was just barely hitting the body. The slight vibe from the engine running and the metal-to-metal contact form the washer made the shifter vibrate and give off a nasty squeal sound. Drove me nutz till I figured it out.

Thanks Hasbeen, job for the winter, just fitting halogen headlamps and new front fogs first. Tried lifting the gear stick, no vertical movement.

Not a surprise since I spent the first few months trying to lift the stick to get into reverse[:(]. You'd think I'd know since I used to have a V8 SD1 with same box, although that was 20 years ago!

Really dumb question: Have you checked the gear lube in the trans to see if it is topped up? Are you running the correct lubricant in the transmission?

Thanks Jclay,

Yup car fully serviced and transmission oil changed. Correct oil used, once had the transmission oil changed on a Rover SD1 V8 with wrong oil, could hardly change gear (same gearbox).
