TR7 Rough Start

Postby Daveboy » 27 Sep 2008 13:19

Hi

Just bought my second TR7 and have a problem with a rough start.
The battery was boosted, It goes from just hearing the dreaded click
click relay sound, to suddenly turning over several times, to all of a sudden starting. Battery looks pretty new, could it just be lack of cranking amps.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It could be anything really from a faulty starter or relay or high resistance in the circuit to a bad battery. I would start at the easiest point and work out. If you have a good starter relay replace the old one and see what happens. Next I would go through and clean all the terminals in the circuit, the relay connections, battery, grounds, and the starter connections. Last but not least if your heading out for errands take the battery with you and drop in at most any parts places and they'll check out the battery for free. If they all check out I think your looking at a starter issue.

Can't save them all but I am trying!!!

Could be bad battery connections - poor earth connection, or relay/starter problems. If it starts sometimes - then it can't be the battery!

Had the exact same problem. Sprayed contact cleaner in the plug the starter relay plugs into, pushed the relay in and out a half dozen times. Problem never came back.
