Seatbelts

Hi
Just got my 76'FHC and although bodywork and mechanicals are all original and in excellent condition, there are as always a few jobs to do.The inertia seatbelts aren't working, they just reel out - is this common and is there a fix for it or should I just ditch them and buy new?
PS First journey was almost 500mls from Birmingham to Aberdeenshire and she never missed a beat.

<u>I</u> wouldn't trust 32+ years old seatbelts, especially not if they were acting strange like yours...
Have them renovated - or fit new ones!

I would replace them. Don't forget that the belts in early cars were differently fitted to later cars - I think James Paddock did have some NOS early belt kits. He is still listing part no YKC2177 on his website:

Funnily enough, my drivers side belt failed last night. It wouldnt pull out. Managed to get it working eventually, but it will need replacing.

For the sake of £20 or so its something that really should be done [:D]

The belts are designed to pull out slowly if you need to move about to reach something but lock up if the movement becomes rapid, as in a crash.

How fast are you pulling at the belts? If you're worried about them, check the stalk's fitting to the seat bases. They have been known to corrode and pull out with little encouragement.[:0]

I've just discovered that they work perfectly as soon as press the brake pedal, but dont lock at any other time no matter how fast you pull them.

Welcome aboard - great to have another TR7 in Scotland, and well done with that long drive home. Seems your belts are not original then - because they would lock on 'jerking' the belt - but if they lock up on braking - that's fine. You just need to persuade the MOT people that they are ok!
