competition half shafts!!!

Postby phill » 15 Sep 2008 19:31

Has anyone come across a 7 or 8 fitted with modified halfshafts??? We are currently rallying a 1976 model which has been given a supposed "works" rear axle. The flanges have been machined down to reduce the diameter allowing racing discs to be fitted. We suspect they might be from another vehicle in the BL range, maybe even a light commercial. The flange is now 4 3/4 inch in diameter (probably an inch smaller than original) it has a PCD of 3 3/4 inch and 19 splines. The shaft is 1 1/4 inch at the spline end. There are some casting numbers on the rear of the flange- tkc 3317 and tkc 3318. However the "k" looks to be back to front!!! Help please.

Hi Phil,
WELCOME TO THE BEST TR7 /8 FORUM IN THE WORLD EVER [:D]
The 'works' cars used the Jaguar 4HA axle due to reliabilty problems with 5 speed axle. The '5 speed axle' was only ever fitted to TR7 and a wider version on the SD1.
Have you any pictures this may help in the ID. of what you have (or any pictures of your car)
Cheers John.

What cars were the 4HA rear axle used in (in the correct width for a TR7)?

Will it bolt in to a stock TR7 rear suspension (dampers, trailing arms, etc.) or does it need to be modified (as it would anyway to attach to the rally car rear suspension)?

Does anyone have good, detailed photos of the rally car rear suspension?

alan

Hi,
4 HA axles were found on many 70s rally cars, they were orignaly fitted to Mk 2 Jaguars and Damiler V8s ect. I think they also found there way into Reliant Scimitars (not the 3 wheeler eh Paul W [;)] ) slightly different poss as called a 7 HA
I would think brackets would be req ect, the amazing rally replica that Phils (Chunks) boss is having built i baleive is fiited with one of these [?]
Cheers John

The Salisbury 4HA is actually a Dana 44 Rear axle that was made undercontract in the UK by Salisbury. The original TR7 Rally cars had a 2HA which was a TR7 Tube axle with a slaisbury limited slip installed.

Hi Michael,
Very intresting stuff, strongest axles come from your side of the muddy ditch for sure. Dana axles they were Mopar based were they not [?] (always been a Mopar fan, owt with a hemi in it)
Looks like a early axle on our Fleabay at the moment-

John-
They are mopar axles and the parts between the dana & salibury are interchangable. Even the rear diff cover too! All cheap over here on this side of the mud water....oh it is salty too! I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler with a Dana 44 with disc brakes I would love to put into my TR8[}:)]
