RIP Lord Stokes

Postby paul w » 22 Jul 2008 14:39

I read in today's Telegraph that Donald Gresham Stokes died yesterday
aged 94. Without this man the TR7 may not have been built.I believe
that he ultimately decided that project Bullet would go ahead and
that it would be a Triumph and not MG built. Under his command BLMC
employed 200,000 and had a turn over of almost £1000 million, making
it the 5th largest motor manufacturer in the world back in the early
seventies.
As we all know,it was'nt to last.

RIP Lord Donald Stokes 22/03/1914 - 21/07/2008

That really is sad. Lord Stokes took a lot of heat for what happened when he was at the helm of BLMC - some of it due to him, but a lot of it not, I think. He was caught in a difficult situation, to say the least.

Had he been allowed to continue on with only Leyland trucks and Triumph, how different things could have been!

But only because that's what they had in the badge box having done design projects for MG but not Triumph before.
