Could be - do you have a warning light when fan comes on - or 'can you hear it'!!

It is odd for it to read 1/4. Cars just don't run at 1/4. The last time i saw a gauge read 1/4 I had a faulty sender unit.

If that is the case then your 3/4 was probably 4/4. I'd replace the sender just as a precaution.

Agree - mine runs just below 1/2 in all weathers and all conditions.

I almost dare not ask this but ... [8)] ...is the fan connected properly (as in turning in the right direction?)

Dave,

My Sprint has always run at the 1/4 mark on temp in normal conditions
Image.

In very cold weather (<10 deg C) it runs slightly under 1/4. In very hot weather (>30 deg C) in stop/start commuting it will get up to the 1/2 mark.

I would shut down the engine if it ever reaches beyond the 3/4 mark.

One thing not mentioned above is to check and adjust torque of the cylinder head buts/bolts. The Repair Operations Manual (ROM) recommends this as a 1000 mile service operation (ROM p16). If the head is under-torqued it is possible that combustion gases may escape into the coolant system.

My 7s temp gauge also runs at 1/4. It rarely gets above that, even
in the hottest weather, but can get lower in cold [below 50F is cold
for us] weather.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I have bypassed the cabin
heater, with a hose, straight from the back of the head, direct to
the water pump.

A couple of years ago, it dropped to running at about 1/8, barely
off the stop. After replacing the sender, & thermostat it went back
to its 1/4. Testing the thermostat showed the 180F thermostat
[stamped on the thing] had started opening at 160F.

I really don't care what the gauge reads, so long as its
conconsistent, & its more relaxing to see 1/4, rather than 3/4 on
the gauge of a 7, regardless of what the actual temperature is. I
check that with a laser temperature unit from time to time.

What the gauge reads is a function of the resistance to ground. The resistance of the temp sender varies according to temp of water. Included in this resistance is the resistance of wire and connections. If the connections are not clean the resistance will be higher. This includes the connections at gauge, temp sender, temp sender to block (corroded threads of sender or block). Theoretically if these are all clean and resistance nears zero you will get a more accurate reading on your gauge.

hi,
the fan is certainly working ok and correctly even if the temp gauge may be suspect.
occassionally reaches 1/2 but generally stays at 1/4 and stays put there.
fan was fitted when i bought it last year from a tr7 trader.
theres no steam rising out of engine bay or funny noises
or smoke
its ok at moment apart from needing a new exhaust and poss upgrading the springs and could do with a respray.
ty all
