Lost ignition key

Hi,
I have lost the ignition key to a 1980 TR7. How do I go about getting a new key? Are there numbers some where that I can retrive? Or do I need to take out the lock and tumbler and take to a key shop?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Clayton,
Contact the Heritage museum at Gaydon, England, give them your VIN number and proof of ownership and they will give you the key number.
You can then get it cut to code at a locksmiths. I did this for my boot/glove box lock. [ http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/ ]

The numbers aren't marked on the locks anywhere, Clayton, so like Danny says the only place to find out is from Heritage, assuming your ignition lock is the original one.

Hey Danny, where did you find a locksmith who could cut to code? I have a couple of original blanks I want to get cut as spares for my cars but having trouble finding someone who can do it. If it was someone local to you do they do mail order?

Remember that the door lock is the same as the ignition key. It might be easier to pull a lock from your door and carry it to a locksmith.

Hi all

On the TR7 I purchased, it did not come with keys. At the time, because it needed work, it wasn't important. As I get closer to the finish it will be.

I believe the door / ignition key is an FS code. Can some one confirm this and also what the code is for glove box and trunk locks?

Don't you have mobile locksmiths?

My son, who has to learn everything the hard way, had not had a
spare set of keys cut for his first car.

When he lost them, we called the nearest locksmith. Their mobile
bloke came, took one of each lock out, cut 2 sets of keys to suit, &
charged A$30. That was about 4 years ago.

When the original keys turned up, they still fitted, as the locks
had not been altered.

Like jclay says if you got the doors apart it's easier to take lock barrel into locksmiths. I got two sets made, originals in dresser drawer, one set with wife one set with me. I'll always have one set to make backups. I just went to local locksmiths in itty bitty Duncan and they took them off the wall and made copies. Nothing special. Brand is Ilco MG1 M81G are the numbers on the blank (Made in Canada.) Small one is Ilco 62FT F68YT.
