Don, what is the bypass?

Nick, if we had to have trouble, 40 miles from family is a good place to be. And if they get it finished tomorrow, we should still be able to get back to Portland in time to catch our flight to Anchorage.

Got the car back from Quality Coaches this afternoon with a new water pump installed. Drove as far as Michell, South Dakota, this afternoon. So far, so good.

Ken,

The award actually didn't go to the guy from California with his 11K mile story. I have it here at the house, in a box to be mailed to Phillip Johnstone, who travelled from Australia to attend. And he is a TR8 owner like you.

The Mitchell Corn Palace - one of the highlights of crossing the prairie! Mostly because there's nothing else around for hundreds of miles. The murals on the building are all made of ears of corn and grains. I have done that trip a number of times and always love it. What's next - the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore?

Elsberry - so the award went for the farthest distance travelled rather than the greatest distance driven? Seems fair enough. Thanks.

We're blitzing through the Rockies quicker than we originally intended, as we have a plane to catch home to Alaska on Monday. But we're still seeing some of the sights:

Mount Rushmore

Arriving at Yellowstone

Yellowstone bison

Old Faithful, the post-sunset show

Crossing the Continental Divide. Once out of the mountains, we rocketed across Idaho to Baker City, Oregon. Tomorrow back to the Portland area.

Saw Old Faithful back in the 70's. Pretty amazing stuff as well as the hot springs. We were tenting then (September) and woke up to frost on the tent. Far cry from crossing the Mohave desert 100+ later on when the A/C broke down.

Well, I'm not sure it's terribly fair, but it's the VTR rules. Jim drove one car from New Mexico, then flew to Michigan and drove another one in, the Poseidon coupe that was there that I was driving for him. He was questioning the award as well, but it's distance travelled! However that happens I guess. I think there should be one for distance driven though, and will bring it up with the VTR folks. Not looking forward to mailing this one...

Dave, for cars driven to their annual national get together, the North American MGA Register (NAMGAR) bases its Distance Award on straight line distance between the point of departure and the meeting location. It doesn't matter to NAMGAR what route is actually taken. That seems clear and fair to me.

Merv, we camped at Yellowstone, too. It was chilly in the morning, but not below freezing. We had amazingly good weather for our entire trip, very little rain and mostly not too hot, never really too cold.

Arrived back in Forest Grove, Oregon, the old family home town today. Have to clean and put away the car tomorrow to fly home to Anchorage on Monday.

We drove a total of 7,338 miles from start to finish. We drove 3,378 miles from Forest Grove, Oregon to Dobson, North Carolina, via Great Falls, Montana, and St. Louis, Missouri, and 3,960 miles from North Carolina to Oregon, via Pandora, Ohio, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. We averaged 21.36 mpg for the entire trip. We also travelled about 1,500 miles by air from our home in Anchorage to the Portland, Oregon, area. Oh, and there was about 40 miles by tow truck from Red Wing, Minnesota, to Minneapolis on the return trip. Thanks everyone for your interest and support. It was a fun trip, and I have Dolly's permission to say so...

Back home safe and reasonably sound. The 8 is put away for the winter in Oregon, we've flown another 1500 miles home to Anchorage, and...

... the weather is still good enough at home to get the 6 out for a drive today:
